1968 Cougar GTE at the Scottsdale Auctions next month?

Yeah it was a pretty well optioned car. I’d love the color combo. It was a real enticing prospect back in 2011 but the owner wanted full retail for a car that was a mystery from the standpoint of body work and frame work needed.

I’m glad someone is taking it to the finish line. Can’t wait to see it!

Actually, I screwed this up! My apologies. The Lime Green Std GT-E was STOCK ordered.

ORDER TYPE STOCK is where the dealership orders the car for themselves for display.

This Black Cherry car was ORDER TYPE RETAIL which means an individual walked into the dealership and ordered it for themselves.

So why did it take until jan '69 (18 months) to sell this car if an individual ordered it in Jul '67???

The build date is almost seven months after the order date. I’d guess the customer who ordered it got tired of waiting or abandoned the deal when the strike happened, but the dealer still had to take the car. Being highly optioned, I can see where it would have taken longer to sell.

Hang on a sec, let me hop in my time machine and check it out…

Ok, I’m back ~ phew! Rough trip :-/ Yeah, the person who ordered it had to back out ~ he was shipped to 'Nam! But I was able to pick it up for a steal, being over a year old and with a “huge” sticker price. The dealer actually had it on their “side lot” and they were using it as a parts runner / lot errand car. The '69 models were taking up the showroom space.
Anyhow, I drove it for about four years - holy cow, that was awesome! Half of it was a blur though - I took it out to California and spent too much time in the sun with the hippies. Got an awesome tan though and learned to surf while I was there too! Tried to keep the GTE looking nice, but didn’t have a garage to keep it in at my bungalow near the beach. I ended up selling it around '73, right before the gas crunch hit - figuring I could buy it back in a few years and pocket the difference. Last I heard though was that some guy tried racing a train with it and got it smashed up pretty good. That sucks, cuz it was a great car. So I figured I’d pop back “home” and give you guys the scoop on it.

Thanks Mike! I thought about the Nam connection also.

So, I’m looking over my Marti reports now looking at order type. My GTE is a Retail Order but my 69 R Code is Order Type Basic. How does Basic differ from Stock and Retail??

My 69 R Code also sat around for a while. Ordered 7-24-68, built 8-26-68, released 11-18-68 and sold 7-31-69.

Answers can be found here.

Stock – a dealer orders a vehicle to have available for display at his/her location
Basic – Ford has excess capacity on an assembly line and produces vehicles to keep the plant busy

Mike you’re living “the dream”! next time you hop a trip like that take some of us with you to the Mercury dealership.
