1968 xr7 G Mercury cougar>>>Hertz rent a racer

LOL the seller is delusional.

Thank you everyone for your input. I have to agree with Royce"s conclusion.

I’m new to this forum but not to being a fan of the Mercury Cougar. Back in '89 my postcard mail in efforts led to the first successful organization of the CT Cougar Club way before Facebook and e-mail made communication so instantaneous. For a short while until work pressures interfered, the members name me their President. Now I think they’ve been included in the New England Cougar Club.
It kills me to admit this but in the Summer of that year, I drove out to see a genuine Hertz XR7-G in Long Island. It was fully equipped, all original, down to the 6 digit DSO, vintage Burgundy, with dark red leather interior, unique armrest equipped full lower console, all XR7-G badges, sunroof equipped, black vinyl top, a very powerful 390 S code 4v motor, Marchal fog lights with black cat covers, 5 styled steel wheels (5th was original spare in trunk) every piece of this Hertz specified vehicle was on this car. It needed your typical NE rust attention but nothing too serious. Here’s the killer: the attractive young lady selling the car knew precisely what she had, including emphasizing the unusual DSO. She was selling the car because when she inadvertently hit the accelerator, the car rocketed off and it scared the bejeezus out of her. All she was asking was $2,500… Which I didn’t have at the time… Sigh.
I still have some old photos of this car, including the vin#. I’ll see if I can share them sometime. I also have a question about this particular Hertz G (besides the obvious: why would anybody in their right mind change the exterior of a car from Cardinal red to springtime yellow, especially when the interior is a dark red?) does anybody else notice the cockeyed position of the left rear wheel in the 2nd photo? Does that look normal, or is it my imagination?

I’d love to see the photos and I’m sure other members would enjoy them as well. If you have the vin # please post it so we’ll know if it’s in the XR7G registry. As far as the rear wheel on this G maybe its just an optical illusion. If you look at the photo the original is mounted to some kind of plaque. Maybe the plexiglass is causing the distortion.
