1970 Cougar Eliminator Trim Question

Hey guys!! My 1st post on the new site!! I am cleaning and detailing the front and rear trim on my 1970 Comp Blue M-code Eliminator and when I got to working on the rear trim pieces it appears that it had some sort of Black out tape stripe on the trunk lid moulding as well as on the 2 rear quarter extension trim pieces.

Does anyone make the replacement black out tape or if not what do you to to refinish? Remove tape and paint like on the front fender and hood mouldings??

Any thoughts/advice are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

I don’t think I have ever seen that on a car before. Any chance you could post a picture? I know this wasn’t helpful, but you learn something new every day… Welcome!

I forget if they are stickers or painted on, but here are some pictures for reference. This blue '70 is a concours restored 428 Eliminator, done by John Benoit. Given John’s experience and reputation I would assume that these details are dead-on correct.

Notice on the quarter trim piece how the black ends in a curve above the backup light lens. Also, the black appears to fold over into the trunk opening, which makes it seem like a decal. (I was actually taking a picture of the hole for the trunk prop rod, which is why this pic is off center)

A couple general rear views:

I don’t have any good detail shots of the front side trim, but it’s the same story… black wraps inside to the ends of the trim pieces. You can kind of barely see it in this shot:

This car has the treatment, even though it’s not a real Eliminator.

original is decal, an upgrade would be painted.

Does anyone reproduce the decals? Alternatively, what paint would you use for a correct appearance?

Thanks for the knowledge transfer on this one guys!! Much appreciated! I’ll have pics up once the car is back together…

I would recommend using black foil or decals for this as paint on stainless might peel off. If there is a company where you live making decals for cars they usually has the foil you need to get this done right.

I bought mine from John’s Classic cougar in Holland Michigan pre made for the rear, the front is paint.
