ugh, Question, are there two pressure hoses that are needed? Trying to figure out how this all goes together and my manual isn’t very helpful. When looking at the parts website I see two hoses, one pump side, one control valve side. do they connect in the middle? I hate to ask stupid questions but have been pulling my hair out on this.
Yes!
I snapped this pic of my '67 unit before tearing it down, if it helps.
So this is what I have figured out. The used setup I bought must have come from a car with a 429 as the pump side pressure hose I bought had the wrong fitting on it. When I looked online I saw the hose that fits the 429 had the fitting I need which is a female not a male end like the hose I bought.
So now I will be waiting for the new hoses to arrive which include the pump side and the control valve side. Will update my progress when that happens.
Maybe it is late but truly the right way to go on hoses (at least the ones that go to the control valve) are the following from NPD (best price on concours repro’s): 3494-41B for the pressure side lower, National Parts Depot | Restoring American History | Mustang Parts | Camaro Parts | Chevelle Parts | Ford Truck Parts | T-Bird Parts | Firebird Parts | Chevy Truck Parts and 3A713-50B for the return side lower National Parts Depot | Restoring American History | Mustang Parts | Camaro Parts | Chevelle Parts | Ford Truck Parts | T-Bird Parts | Firebird Parts | Chevy Truck Parts. Do yourself a favor and get these, you will thank me later.
I HIGHLY recommend using all new hoses. The above should be the expensive ones, you can use the lesser hoses for the other four with good results (although I like to use the (supposedly) concours ones for the valve to ram hoses too). The upper pressure and return lines are fine in the lesser parts.
Also, do you have the frame mount block (rubber, clamp and bracket) for the (other than valve to ram) hoses? If not, you will need to get a set (I have restored used ones if you like).
The “regular” aftermarket hoses in a word, suck. They do not fit right especially at the block which leads to blown, leaking or burned hoses many (most) times. They are the main reason people whine and complain about this type of power steering system.
I have already ordered the other hoses. Once I make sure I have everything figured out and the right pump in place plus the rest of the system is working fine, I will order the quality hoses.
I will check to see if that bracket is there or not. If it isn’t I would be interested in purchasing the one from you.
Thanks for your help on this. I really appreciate it. Nice to know there are people out here willing to help guys like me that are just starting to learn the car.
My pleasure to help. About the bracket, it will not be on your manual steering car. You might have taken it off the car that you got all the stuff with? It would be right at the junction of the upper and lower pressure/return hoses and it mounts to the frame right near where the driver’s side lower control arm (of the suspension) attaches. You can buy the bracket/parts new repro for about $65, but I can do a lot better than that for original restored pieces.
Here is a picture of my car during assembly that shows the lower hoses and the bracket well.
Come to think of it, I still have the hoses pictured and they were at one time new from Ford, I reconditioned them and used them when I built Isabel but ultimately decided to replace them, the pressure hose weeps a tiny bit as I recall. Maybe like one drop from one of the crimps in about a weeks time. I am a self-admitted perfectionist. If you are interested in them, I would make you a good deal on them, maybe $50 for the pair.
Oh, and BTW, there is a hose clamp (regular stainless worm screw sort) that goes on the control valve in the area just beyond where the valve clamps to the drag link (the long bar), it hold the two hoses tightly and supports them so when the drag link travels back and forth the metal tubing of the hoses does not flex or move. You will want to be sure and put that in place on your setup.
Regards,
Bob
Include the rubber bracket and you I will take them.
Your car is beautiful by the way. I hope to someday have mine as nice as yours. My 12 year old is already talking about how it will be his someday…
How did Isabel get her name?
Thanks Doc. Isabel is named as such because the car was underwater (yes, really!) in the Chesapeake Bay in the 2003 Hurricane of that name.
I can do the bracket complete for $40 and the hoses for $50. I think I can get them in a small flat rate box or envelope, If so, I’ll cover the shipping, If not, we’ll work something out. How’s that?
Are you sure of the 429 application? The only 67-70 Mustang or Cougar to leave the factory with a 429 would have been the 69-70 Boss 429 cars. If one of those cars is still sitting in a salvage yard…

Cathouse, I will know more as soon as the hoses I ordered arrive.
I bought this used setup from an old mustang collector. He said he wasn’t sure what it was off from but that he was pretty sure it was a 351c. The previous hoses I bought would not connect to the power steering pump so I can only assume it was the other pump for those years as everything else has been right so far. Worst case is I will just pick up the right pump if none of these fit. Those pumps are fairly inexpensive at least.
Bob,
I will take them but let me get those new cheap hoses I bought in first and test everything to make sure it’s working. I have a feeling I will run into more issues and wife is already breathing down my neck for the $ I have spent so far on (in her words) “something that is going to make the wheel turn easier”…
