68 Cougar Bud Moore trophy

Claims to be a best crew chief trophy for Bud Moore with Tiny Lund driving. Only things is I see nothing on the trophy directing it to Bud Moore or the year.

The picture I have show it as number 15 in 68 body and number 16 in the re bodied 69 Cougar. He did win that race, but doesn’t give the car number. The next five places were all Camaro, so a nice win for Lund in the Cougar :ylsuper:

Brian the lower picture has me confused. On the number 15 Cougar’s hood does it say 302 ci or 402 ci? To me it looks like 402 and I thought SCCA racing was limited to 5.0 litre. All of the racing photos of Cougars I have seen had the team Cougar paint type scheme. This one does not. What racing series is this Cougar from? If it is 302 then it fits with SCCA right?
Steven

302 cu on the hood. This is from the Grand touring series, or better know as the baby grand from NASCAR. The average was 143 mph that race making it the second faster average that season. The fastest being Alanta at 148 mph which Tiny came in second to Donnie Allison in a Mustang. Out of 19 races 6 were run on dirt tracks.

Very cool find Brian!

Yes, wish it had some markings identifying Tiny or Bud or the Cougars.

My racing programs show Darlington as being on Sept. 1st in '68.

And great point on the 5 Camaros. Always tons of Mustangs and Camaros going against the few BME Cougars in '67 (TA) and '68 (GT).

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I like the idea that Cougar’s were successful against the other cars in the field even when out numbered.

I e-mailed the seller and what he said checked out! Still I wouldn’t spend that much cash for it unless it had some writing to indicate for sure what it is. it could still be from the 1983 race.

"Hello, and thanks for asking !! go to http://www.ultimateracinghistory.com/racelist3.php?trackid=159
and you will see in the years of the Darlington Raceway there has only been two “250” races, August 31, 1968 (Tiny Lund)
and September 4, 1983 ( Neil Bonnett), the age of the trophy is from the 1960’s, that is how I based this to be Bud Moore’s trophy.
hope this helps,tom "

Interesting.

I wonder if there was a rain delay or they entered in the statistics the next day?

If it only had more info engraved on it, that trophy would go for a lot more money IMHO.

Again, thanks for posting Brian.

Yeh, I agree Phil. I posted that type of question to the seller as well and this is what he said about the estate that had it.

“Hello, thanks for the reply !! the estate this came from the gentleman was a very
close friend of Bill France Sr., and he knew just about everybody in racing.
thanks,tom”
