'69-'70 Cougar Wanted - UPDATE - bought a car

Update 7-2-12 - We found a car locally on Craigslist and bought it. I’m disapointed we didn’t find the “right” XR7, but this standard will have to do. I really appreciate everyone’s help.

Pontiac Ed

I’m looking for a straight rust free '69 or '70 Cougar preferrably an XR-7, but will defintely consider standard model Cougars. I’d like to find a stick shift car but I will consider automatics. It would also be preferred if the paint, chrome and interior were generally cruise night presentable as is and as original as possible. I’d prefer the car be drivable. I’m not interested in rare cars or high dollar restorations, our plan is to build a stout street car with a pump gas stroked 351W and overdrive stick transmission.

My ideal car would be a Dark Ivy Green '69 XR7 351W stick.

I have a nice project '70 Torino Cobra 429SCJ 4 speed 4.30 geared Drag Pack car and a very nice low mile '68 4 speed GTO for sale or trade.

Ed what part of the world are you in
might help

Dr. Art,

I’m in the Chicago area, but I’m willing to travel for a good car.

First we had Mopar Don and now Pontiac Ed. Welcome to the forum.

Another Chicago Cougar Owner?!? Excellent news. Good luck in your search!

Actually there is no mopardon on this forum ! Its MercuryDon here…lol

Thanks I suspect I’ll be needing more than a little luck.

I just bought a really beautiful rust-free 68 XR7 in the Chicago burbs last fall. It spent all its life in Cali and Vegas, then was moved out here several years ago and garage-kept and not driven in rain or snow. And there won’t be any driving in rain or snow while she’s my car. Not a chance.

I was looking for one with a manual trans too, but could not pass on my Cougar when she came along. Swap to a T5 down the road is something I’d love to do. Maybe in a couple years. I’m okay with the AT for now anyway.

Just keep an eye on Craigslist and EBay and something will come along.

Where at in Chicago? Ive had a few of us get together on occasion.

I’d check craigslist ( thats where i picked up my 69) and e-bay.
You never know…

Downers Grove. I figure that there is a near zero chance of finding a rust-free car around here so I’m definitely looking everywhere.

I found mine in Homer Glen, not terribly far from you. I also am in the middle of moving to Brookfield, so also not far from you.

Watch out for Bricklyn, he arranges these “get togethers” which end up just being you, him, a dark alley… That’s why there are so few Cougar owners around here. He’s super territorial.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Did you see the '67 that’s on eBay today, in Aurora?

There’s also one that’s been dismantled a fair bit, listed out of Cali, with a buy it now price under $2k.

Thanks for your leads. I just checked EPay. I saw the Aurora car. Way too rusty and messed with for my taste. The Cali car was a little better, but still way too rough. I really want a drivable straight rust-free car, I can do some faded paint and some interior flaws. I’m turning loose a 39k original mile '68 GTO that twice won its class at the GTOAA nationals and a 1 of 207 Drag Pack 1970 Torino Cobra project for a Cougar my son & I are going to tastefully hotrod. I guess I’m looking for a good #3 car with emphasis on rust-free & straight.

I would check craigs list in califorina, there are a lot of 67-70 cougars that are not to bad for the price.
2,500 -5000 will get you a good starter car with no major rust issues. The only draw back is the transport costs to get the
back to Chiago.

Scott.

I’ve been looking there, but I’m not getting very good response when I email the sellers. I’lll keep trying.

Pontiac Ed, I may have a car that might interest you. I was in the process of building it and may never finish. It is a '67 standard, but has been sub-framed, has an aftermarket front racing suspension with coil over shocks and rack and pinion, custom built rear end with Detroit Locker. Was started for a big motor and to run the street.

I also have tons of extra parts and a '68 Dan Gurney parts car that I would like to sell with it. Like to get rid of everything in one deal. You can build your car, use the parts you want and sell the rest. If you think you might be interested email me at:

I am in the Kansas City area.

Here is a 67 in Menomonee Falls, WI.

Yeah thats me you should see all the spare parts I have laying around. :greenchainsaw:

Actually Scott had a few too many and ended up in county - Bubba said he took good care of you.

Ill add ya to the list for the next shin-dig - Scotts buyin the 1st round! :beerchug:

That car is misleading. I was excited to buy it, back when I was shopping for my Cougar in October. It looks great. But ask for more photos and they’ll send you several showing the quarter panel and door sections that look like swiss cheese and tell you it’s because mice nested inside there for some time.

If it wasn’t for that, I would have bought that car last year instead of mine. It’s even manual trans. Just needs a fair amount of body work.

Oh and Bricklyn I seriously can’t wait for the next get together. Only this time hopefully it will be nice weather and we can drive our cats.
