'70 Console & Dash Repair / Resto Questions

Hey Fellahs,

I’m lookin at a '70 Cougar with a console, and it appears the “black” is peeling off around the shifter and woodgrain insert piece. Is there a recommended method for restoration?
Pull it, pop the wood grain section, mask it off and spray it? Or just spring for a repro?

I know there are places that do console restoration too. How much do they usually charge for something like that?

Also, I know the Eliminator passenger dash piece is like Unobtanium… so what do people do to “get by” on that, and keep some semblance of camera-case look? Car currently has XR7 woodgrain dash bits installed (both sides), but the owner still has the camera-case gauge pod (I’m not sure what condition though).

Any tips on camera-case dash bits and console repair / resto would be greatly appreciated.

70Cougar428 had some great dash resto tips here: http://www.mercurycougar.net/forums/showthread.php?59130-70-Console-amp-Dash-Repair-Resto-Questions

Anyone have any tips on redoing the black finish on the console?

I took the easy way out. The repro console inserts are very nice.

Mike, My center console black was peeling up and I took a razor knife and was able to peel back most of the black. cleaned it good taped it off and sprayed it with a charcoal colored hammered finish paint from Home Depot. Not original but looks good.

My wood grain also needs attention but will do

For the XR7 console insert I went to a woodworking shop Rocklers bought some burl wood it comes in real thin sheets cut out to fit in the console. Several coats of low gloss lacquer, glued it in place then lacquered over it to seal it. I did this over a year ago and it still looks good. The kringle paint sounds like a good deal too. I’ll post some pictures later in the week.
