A little glimpse into the past of my car

I received the original invoice for my '70 std vert from Marti today. It will go nicely with the rest of the stuff they’ve supplied me.

I found the hand written notes interesting:

Mine was the only one of 8 black/white std convertibles with 351C 2V/FMX drive trains to get a vinyl back window (backlite) according to the database. That seems to indicate it was originally intended for export or lease according to the note.

What I wonder about is did the factory or the dealer install a glass window that was subsequently replaced with vinyl when the new top was installed (2012) or did it really roll off the lot as built? Who knows?

That is cool.

What was the order type?

When I spoke with Kevin Marti about invoice discrepencies last year he talked specifically about cases such as yours! I was told that occasionally a car would come off the line that had something installed incorrectly or NOT installed - i.e. an error in assembly, or substitution of a part for one reason or another. Kevin specifically described seeing it with rocker moldings installed on cars that were not intended to have them.

Kevin said that the factory invoice would reflect these “errors” in hand written notes, which would indicate “no charge” or “give away”, or a change in cost of some sort “per so-and-so”. Which appears to be exactly what you have here!

To me, it looks like your car was factory equipped with a GLASS back-light despite this not being the intended equipment as configured in the Ford database → which is why the Marti Report lists “vinyl backlight” (the Ford data was not updated to reflect the production line substitution)! There was an error of some sort and your car appears to have left the line with a hand documented change.

Also interesting seeing the car was ordered by Ford and shipped to Kumpf. DSO 91, so possibly ordered over-seas by a serviceman and shipped to Kumpf for pickup when he returned home? Hmm…

I looked at a black/white 70 XR-7 convert about 19 years ago. The owner was asking $5k at the time. I contacted him sometime later & he stated he was going to keep it & his son was going to get it drivable. They moved to the Northwest somewhere.
Kinda wish I had got it. But there’s a 4speed blue one that I kind wanted…

Hell I liked all of them, just not enough to keep. I do have a few “extras” but they all fit around here!

D115- could this be related? 6 digit DSO’s were paint related I thought?

51 = Denver Wonder what the “D” is?

It is the dealer code. At that time, Kumpf Motors was located in DSO 51, and their dealer code was D115. Pretty sure that is correct.

Really cool.

What’s cool is the fact the assembly line messed up and installed the "glass " backlite and they realized the error and waved the charge…
