Has anyone installed aftermarket 3-point seat belts in their 67 or 68? I was looking at a few styles from Drake, Wesco, etc. and they are all very similar. I would like to install on the B-pillar (door jamb) instead of the roof but I noticed that there may be interference with the rear window crank. Also, the kits come with a 90 degree adapter which allows a single outboard floor mount instead of having to drill another mounting point. I’m not sure this is a good setup. Any thoughts or tips would be appreciated. Thanks.
Check out autorestomod channel on YouTube. They did a 3 point conversion on a fairlane that turned out pretty nice.
I did a 3 point conversion on my '69 Convertible and I think it turned out pretty good. The only issue I have is that the shoulder mount near the top front of the rear quarter panel is extremely close to the path of the rear window crank and you actually have to move the buckle when it is not buckled up in order to crank on the window. Makes me feel much safer though.
Thanks for the feedback. The interference with the rear window crank is a concern but not a deal breaker for me. Did you drill into the door jamb to mount the support? How does it look with the door open? Where did you get your kit?
Just thinking out loud…
Some of the big Fords, Lincolns and Mercs of the era had front vent windows that were operated by cranks that resembled the ones used in Cougars, but with a shorter crank arm. I don’t know if they’re actually interchangeable, but perhaps they could be used to gain some clearance while maintaining a somewhat OEM look.
Here are a couple of video clips on how to on a mustang. I haven’t watch them yet, but should be good info.

I’ve actually had the kit for a while (over a year) and I got them from Andover Restraints. Somewhere around $280 for 3 sets of lap belts and 2 front 3 point sets with all the hardware.
I did have to drill a hole in the convertible “pillar” if you can call it that, along with the metal cover panel and floor where the retractor mounts.
The rear window cranks are already a short version of the normal cranks so I am not sure if the quarter window cranks referenced earlier would be any shorter.
Yes, the vent window cranks are shorter still.
Hmmmm…since the vent window cranks are even shorter than the rear qtr window cranks on my vert, you just gave me another option to prevent interference on my 3 point seatbelt installation. ![]()
Thanks!
That’s EXACTLY what I was thinking!
I’m not sure if a 64 Galaxie vent window crank could be mated with the existing shaft though. Have to do some research.
Hey Daryl,
How much was it to get the shoulder belts installed? I have been waiting for the right convertible to come along but shoulder belts are a must for me. Just wanna know how deep this particular part of the money pit is!
Thanks!
Todd
Todd,
Other than the cost of the seat belts from Andover Restraints, it didn’t really cost me anything. I had to drill a few holes after doing some measuring and test fitting. It really was pretty simple to do.
I know this 3-Point seat belt thread is several years old but I’m hoping to hear from some of you who have used 3 point seat belts in your Cougar overtime. I’m interested in mounting on the existing roof bracket on my 69 XR7. According to WCCC video, Don claims mounting by rear quarter doorjam doesnt work out very well and the should belt keeps sliding off. Thoughts?
I can’t speak to the hardtop pillar, but where I mounted mine on the convertible quarter near the window crank path has worked very well for me. It does not slip off my shoulder, but when I reach back to bring it forward to buckle up I have to pull slow or it will lock up every other inch or so. Just have to pull slow and easy.
I love them personally as they make me feel safer.
I’m looking at seatbelt options for my 67. Just wondering if anyone has gone with harness options and how they mount versus the retractable seatbelts. I’m almost tempted to put a 2-point rollbar in to use for shoulder belt mounting instead of just mounting on the door jamb, but I don’t know if that will make it impossible to get in and out of the backseat or not.
If I just go the retractable route, I’d probably use something like this: 3 Point Seat Belt Conversion, Push Button Style Buckle, maroon (burgundy) - #61172-23BB - National Parts Depot
Anyone have experience with those?
I used a roll bar with braces to the rear wheel houses. Part of the reason is I installed a pair of 2018 Mustang seats with lumbar, and when the test fittings for the upper mount were being done, determined that attaching on the roof brace, belt would dig into my neck, so the roll bar mounting was/is the solution. I don’t have a great image of it, but including one.
Best
Ron
PS, both my Daughter in law and sister in law have ridden in the back seat. No issues with the ingress or egress. Really glad to have the power seats!
Where did you source the roll bar? That’s exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.
Summit, part # Competition Engineering CEE-3039 roll bar hoop.
