I have a '68 Cougar, I need to have the Transmission rebuilt. It’s a C4, anyone know a good place in SoCal (San Diego) I can take it too?
I decided to rebuild it myself. It’s a 1974 c4 transmission, Everything I have researched makes it seem fairly easy. I’m getting a master rebuild kit for the Ford C4 transmission. This kit contains all Borg-Warner clutches and Raybestos steel plates. Also included is a Transtec soft parts kit with every rubber seal and gasket, new filter, front band, rear band, vacuum modulator, and the main bushings. I’m also getting C-4, C-5 Transmission 1972-86 Thrust Washer Kit, Ford C-4, C-5 Transmission Over Run Roller Sprag/Spring Kit, and a Transco Shift Kit. I’m getting everything from Oregon Performance Transmission. Has anyone ever ordered from them? They seem to have the best prices.
The C4 is one of the easiest trans to rebuild. Have lots of “clean” bench space and lay the parts out in order as you disassemble it. Then just reverse assemble it as you clean and replace with new parts.
You will need to replace the bonded servo piston for reverse. You are buying thrust washers, you may need to also buy a set of selective thrust washers. It’s the washer that sits behind the pump. They are plastic and inexpensive. Chances are you will need a different one to obtain the proper end play. Be sure to check that the sealing rings are not wearing a groove in the surface where the outer diameter of the ring rides. Governor support is a common area for ring grooves.
I’ve never ordered from Oregon Transmission. Being I have a shop, I buy from my local trans parts supplier.
I decided a long time ago to never rebuild another automatic when I scattered a C-4 that I did… Broke the case in half… I put a seal in backwards and it built enough pressure that when it shifted out of first, well, that was it… fluid everywhere…
That was over 20 years ago now…
Brian.
Thanks for all the info guys. I will keep ya posted and let ya know how it goes. I’m also looking for a plug kit, to plug some holes on the fire wall. Does anyone know of a plug big enough to plug the heater coil hole?
