I sent my tilt wheel assy out of my 70 for a rebuild. They are sending the column body back to me so I can media blast it a repaint it. I have a black interior. What is the true color supposed to be of my dash and steering column? Thanks

Dark Charcoal Metallic
Dash pad extensions - (triangle plastic pieces) are shot with the same color just flatter in finish
Depending on what they blast the panels will you may need to sand the steering column (and the dash possibly) lightly with some 100 or 200 to return the surface to the original finish.
Color/paint provided by some makers is fairly thin so most will strip the pieces and shot a couple of light full coats of semi-gloss black (don’t fill the grain) then lay a couple of full dry coats of the Dark Charcoal over it. Its very easy to put too much Charcoal on (if you are using only that) and fill the grain and produce a smooth shinny finished look by using just the Charcoal ![]()
Hope this helps
Thanks J, So is the paint a satin, semi-gloss or gloss? I am used to doing very light coats on the dashes to not fill in the texture so that’s not an issue. Thanks
Semi gloss on all the major panels (other than the couple metiond in the other post) Those are more of an egg shell
Who did you send your column out for repair? What condition was yours in before and how much did they base their charge?
I sent my column to Steve Liebenow in Santa Clara. He did a fantastic job on it. I have not re-installed it yet because of some other related projects on the dash but I’m hoping to have it installed in the next couple of weeks. The charges were $725 plus shipping. It was a hefty sum but when I thought about buying another used unit and possibly needing the same repairs done, I decided to have him do it. It looks like my unit was pretty hammered!!!
I sent him the column and he disassembled it and sent me the column tube and the (2) top pieces for me to blast and to repaint. Once They were painted I sent those items back to him and he reassembled the column. For ducks sake, I have listed the charges below so you know escatly what went into it. Lots of money but it should be good now for the life of the car.

150 Replacement lower casting- repaired or later replacement part
45 Position rack and pivot pin- good used
25 Replacement ignition rack-good used
