Electric fans

Like to get some feedback on using electric fans on my 67 289. I had a factory radiator and shroud and ran hot in town. I put in a champion aluminum radiator and still gets up to 230 or so in town slow driving. I can get a shroud with 2 12 inch puller fans from the same company for about $200.00 Any feedback is appreciated. :beerchug:

Where do you live? Are you dealing with 110 in Phoenix? The best cooling system going for a '67 289 is to switch to the 24 inch wide radiator (same size as 390), factory style shroud and factory fan and clutch.

I run a 24" radiator with 2 x 12" fans on my 302 and they work great and I’m running the set up in a sub-tropical environment

You should switch to a 24" radiator anyway.

Factory clutch fan and 24" is marginal in traffic with the a/c on on a hot a day. If you run a/c connect one of the fans to come on with the a/c and it will keep the inside cold as well. You need three relays one that brings the fan on with the a/c and the others that bring both fans on with the temp sender. I have a 195 / 180 temp switch in the goose neck

If you stick with a standard fan ditch the clutch and replace it with a solid spacer you won’t miss a couple of horsepower

After fighting with overheating problems for a few years I finally bit the bullet and got myself a 24 inch aluminum 2 row radiator. the rows are 1 inch wide so it does better than a copper 3 row radiator. You will ahve to cut into the radiator support to get it in there and it’s kind of a pain. I thought it would be a 1-2 hour ordeal and it turned into a weekend job. I have two 11" electric fans with a fan shroud all hooked to a relay. If you get electric fans mount the braker in a cooler location because if the braker gets hot it will pop causing your fans to shut off making everything even hotter. I actually have mine mounted on the other side of the engine compartment wall in the fender well and have my wires come back in. I also have a 16psi radiator cap. If your cap is bad you will overheat too. Gotta make sure everything is working properly for sure. Other wise you will go crazy trying to figure it out.

Thanks for the response guys

Since I’m missing my shroud and am about to replace my radiator hoses since one broke, I’m thinking it’s a good time to switch to a 24" radiator with electric fan(s). My main question is when buying an aftermarket 24" radiator to pair with my 68 302, will the stock hoses work? Or when I buy new hoses, which I’m doing already, will I need to get something different? I know the neck location varies from one radiator to the next, so wanna make sure I don’t buy hoses I can’t use.

To pick up a radiator, shroud with electric fans, and hoses, is there a good place to get that as a package to be sure that they all mate together properly?

From what I noticed when goin to an aluminum radiator, Scott, you CAN get p/s inlet/outlets, but the price jump is crazy high. I ended up picking up on from Dillon Radiator, with p/s in, d/s out, and used the flexible, metal hose to get it back to the water pump. Not the perfect solution, but, it works well, and the radiator was inexpensive.

I used the “16x26 Ford” $139 Racing radiator…almost keeps it too cool, even in this 100-110*+ Oklahoma heat.

I love the price but was hoping to find one that has the trans cooling connections as well which that one doesn’t appear to from the description. I’m guessing you went with a standalone aftermarket trans cooler as well?

No, no trans cooler on mine…running a Toploader 4 speed. If you search their “by model” feature, and put in a 68 Mustang, they show one with trans bungs welded on, for 269.00. They stop the Cougar at 72, though, the buggers!
