Eliminators on the Market (June 2022)

Hope Carlisle is treating everyone nice! Hope everyone is getting out and enjoying their Cougars and Eliminators every chance they get ~ I know I am! Had a few sales this month, a few ads that dropped off, and I cut an old listing after folks were saying they couldn’t get in touch with the seller.

BEWARE OF SCAM LISTINGS OF ELIMINATORS FOR SALE!
Scammers are using pictures from legitimate listings (old and current) and passing them off as their car that is for sale, at prices well below market value. Always verify the car is real and the VIN is legitimate by checking with the CCOA or Eliminator Registry.
Also be sure to order your own Marti Report. Scammers have been doctoring Marti’s and changing VINs. Marti will not charge you for an invalid VIN.
Never send a deposit without confirming there is actually a real Eliminator associated with the listing.
And as always, remember that if it is too good to be true then it is probably a scam.

Consigned for Barrett-Jackson, Las Vegas;

Interesting auction description…

The car retains most of its original paint, original door tag, original pedal assembly, the original body panels and floors.

Seems legit… To bad it is missing it’s original power train.

Whoever put eyes on that '69 needs to contact BJ if the auction description is misleading. Mike, is there photo evidence of the date codes and which panels?

I only have one picture of a date code on the bottom of the rocker, dated June 10th. Build date on the car is May 2nd.

I was going through my notes though and came across some interesting posts by a previous owner…

June 2003

Thanks you guys. The VIN is 9F91G570308. It’s the one that was on e-bay last week. It has a 351W and an auto, but the body is rust-free; that’s why I’m buying it. I’m flying out to the midwest tomrrow to pick it up, and then driving it home to Massachusetts Cannonball-style. I’ll register it as soon as I have the title in hand.
I’ll have tons of questions, but for now I’m wondering if the air cleaner was labeled any differently than a Mustang, e.g., any Mercury identification. How about a list of options for '69? I have a set of chrome magnums which would look a lot better than the argent rims. How about A/C?

Nov 2011

My Boss Eliminator was never a manual!

This sounds crazy, but I’m beginning to believe it’s true. I purchased my car about 8 years ago with a 351W and an automatic. I bought it because it is a rust-free car with its G-code on at least one front inner fender and maybe both. It is clean as a whistle underneath. I’ve slowly been collecting parts to “put it back” to a manual. The first thing I did was to put a clutch pedal arm in it. I had to pull the clutch pedal assembly out because the bushings had swelled such that the arm wouldn’t fit with the nylon bushings on it. When I looked at the bracket closely, it was clear that the bushings had never had a clutch pedal arm in them; they were brand new. No biggie; I figures someone put an NOS pedal bracket in it. Next, I went to put an equalizer bar pivot mount on the frame rail. Guess what? NO threaded inserts in the frame. Now, I know that they sometimes rust out, and fall into the frame, but there is no rust on this car, so the spot welds on both inserts would have had to fail. Now here’s the killer: I was under the dash today, trying to wire an aftermarket tach, and noticed that there is no hole in the firewall for the clutch rod to go through. NO HOLE! And the firewall has not been patched. My window sticker of course says the car came with a 4 speed. But how do you explain all this? I have not seen the actual build sheet. . .

the G VIN is stamped on at least one of the inner fenders. The car also has the wrap-around shock towers and staggered shocks. It’s a Boss car.

I have the Marti report. I know all the Boss stats. I also know an unmolested car when I see it. I’ve been collecting these cars for 30 years. I’m just telling you what I’m seeing (and not seeing).

Sounds like a clear case of a rebody.

Sounds like someone needs to get under there and inspect the staggered shock brace to see if its factory. I wonder if Mr. Dave W is going to BJ Vegas? I know 70scj4spdvert lives in Vegas…

I agree that seems to be the case, but the staggered rear is what confuses me. I thought 428 CJ manual cars and boss cars got the staggered rear shocks. So, if it is a full rebody, it would be a manual in either case - but the firewall says that isn’t the case. Alternatively, it would be a significant amount of work to just add the staggered shock parts from a boss or CJ car (I would think) - how hard would that be to do?

Now that I think about it, the VIN, staggered shocks and clutch pedal all probably came from the original Boss car. I wouldn’t be surprised if the car they are on now has its original drivetrain - a re-vined 351 Cougar.

That’s what I think too. I’d be curious to see if there are VIN stamps on the drivetrain, and / or any original paint color hiding somewhere on the car.

Also noticed in the video the tach is a 6K. The Boss cars should have an 8K.

Looks like the description has been updated for lot 652.1

“Lot #652.1 - This 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator Boss 302 with Deluxe Marti report verifying its authenticity is a Boss 302 car. Originally equipped with a 302ci V8 and a 4-speed manual transmission it is now powered by an upgraded 351ci V8 engine and a 3-speed automatic transmission. The car retains its original door tag and original pedal assembly. Equipped with power steering and power brakes. From The High-Octane Collection.”

The underside shows this car has had some serious time and money spent on it. The stainless exhaust system, maybe JBA headers? Engine oil pan is huge, transmission oil pan is huge, rear axle housing is huge - it goes on and on all the expensive things I can see. Well done whoever did this one.

Hello Mike. Was this Eliminator previously owned by Joe Valenti? Thanks.

My understanding is that it was previously owned by Joe Valenti, as well as Rod McLeod. Rod displayed it at the 50th Anniversary show in Dearborn.
It was previously a largely “factory appearing” car under the hood.

Planning to go look at this car this week, anything in particular to keep an eye on with these? More familiar with Mustangs than Cougars.

Mike, any idea if this was a numbers matching car when it last sold?

Sorry. I don’t have anything in my files that says whether the engine is numbers matching or not.

Bring your flashlight and an inspection mirror. The engine should be pretty clean, but it might be hard to read a VIN stamp through the paint. Probably difficult to see the casting date behind the starter too :-/

You MIGHT be able to find / see the engine assembly date though. It should be stamped in the front of the block along the edge of the timing cover on the passenger side.

Hello Mike. Thank you for the confirmation. I talked with Joe V. when he was the owner and had this Eliminator for sale. Thought it looked familiar.

Went to look at the car, I’d say it is just an okay driver in person. Don’t have much positive to say about the auction company but will leave it at that. The car is 1 of 9 at this auction by a woman whose husband died of Covid late last year. He worked on the cars himself but farmed the engine work out to some place in ND. She isn’t familiar with what he had been done on any of them but had seen the engine being put into this Cougar and has no idea if it’s original. Since this isn’t a car I’m planning on buying I thought I’d provide some in person comments on the car for anyone possibly interested.

The paint is decent but would probably look better with paint correction. There’s lots of swirls and faint marks in the paint. There’s a lot of dirt and misc other marks/debris/tar along the rocker panels and fenders. If someone had done this women a favor and cleaned the car it might’ve helped but difficult to say how much of that would come out easily. Lots of old undercoating in various states of wearing off. The inside areas of the trunk have a few spots that might be worth looking into but I didn’t see any other body issues.

The interior probably will need a refresh. There’s a few cracks and discolorations, the biggest being a quarter sized one on the driver arm rest.

It has definitely been restomodded, but that’s something most ppl can see from the pics.

My guess is the engine has been replaced. The console of each car had handwritten notes on his oil change intervals and notes on the engine. On all the other cars the engine was noted as “rebuilt” but on this particular one it was noted as “fresh 358C”. He did also have a note on this one that the trans was rebuilt.

Sorry for the long post but hopefully this helps someone out. Imo the current bid is slightly strong for its current state but it’s also very hard to find 70 eliminators right now
