*Seller mentions having a project '69 CJ 4-speed Eliminator he is considering selling as well. If anyone calls on this one, please get some details on the '69 as well.

Yep, A major project. But not as bad as some.

True, but it is a bit crusty…

Mike,

Do we know anything about the orange GA 428 car? Seems reasonable given the mods if original parts are included and depending on quality of 4spd conv.

Bad: Hitch for towing…
Good: rear stabilizer bar hardware is showing, and the metal ring beneath the tops of the shocks makes them look original. Even a hood pin (but wrong location).

I talked to the owner (Randy Fleeman) back in August. He had also spoken with one of the Cars On Line folks recently and gave them a good rundown on the car, stating that it has an aluminum PI intake and aluminum heads on the car.
Here are the links to the Cars On Line blogs for the GA 428 car:

http://www.cars-on-line.com/2016/jul-28.html
http://blog.cars-on-line.com/2016/07/29/1970-mercury-cougar-eliminator-428cj/

An acquaintance of mine went to inspect the car a few weeks ago. He had this to say about it:

I decided to pass on Randy Fleeman’s '70 Eliminator. It is a well represented car, and I knew it was not number’s matching. The C6 trans does have the VIN though. He basically built it as a Drag car, but the race that he was planning on running was cancelled so he lost interest. It is a very clean car and the motor/transmission is bullet proof. It was repainted 25 years ago and has multiple areas that would need to be fixed. No rust at all. He took me out on a drive, but when I asked to drive it, he said the car scared him and did not let me.

Personally, I think the price is in line with what we have seen other '70 CJ / Auto Eliminators with non-matching drivetrain sell / list for recently.
Some comparables…

’70 CJ / Auto Eliminator, comp orange / black interior, replacement block / non-matching numbers. Sold for $47k hammer price at Mecum in May 2016. This one was listed for several months prior to auction for $90k, and received bids of $50k during a few of it’s eBay listings.

’70 CJ / Auto, comp green / houndstooth, believed to be original / numbers matching drivetrain. Sold for $67.5k at Mecum in July 2016.

’70 CJ / Auto, comp gold / black interior, original / numbers matching drivetrain. Disassembled project. Sold for about $25k in May 2016.

’70 CJ / Auto, pastel blue / blue décor interior, original / numbers matching drivetrain. Disassembled project. Listed for $45k, but only bidding to about $22k - which is comparable to the comp gold project above.

’70 CJ / Auto, comp blue / black interior, replacement drivetrain / non-matching numbers. Asking $74K OBO (recently bid to $59.6k).

The fellah who looked the car over passed on it because he is looking for something a little more original and factory correct. He also sent me some pics. A few of the more interesting items that can be noted from the pics;

  • Full length subframe connectors and a scatter shield bellhousing. Presumably installed for racing, as mentioned above.
  • It looks like the front driver’s apron may have been replaced. Factory spot welds are not visible, and there is quite a bit of wrinkling to the apron top (my car has the same “feature”, so maybe a fitment issue with the replacements).

Thanks Mike. Good info.

Here’s one

Yeah, saw that this weekend! Cougar Bill was trying to get a look at it, and the owner did email me back saying he would get me some information / details. Hope to talk to him soon - he sounds like a busy guy (fire fighter).

From data that I’ve gathered, I know that there were three sequentially VIN’d Special Paint Order '70 Boss 302 Eliminators ordered on the same day from the Kumpf dealership (Colorado DSO). I have confirmed data on two of them, and unconfirmed on the third one which is supposed to have a houndstooth interior - I believe this Eliminator is that third Special Paint Boss Cat, but I’m waiting on confirmation of the VIN from the owner.

Very cool to see that it was apparently ordered in Light Gray Metallic (aka “Silver”), with a houndstooth interior! I’ve always thought that if I could go back in time and order any combination that would be the one I would choose - silver and houndstooth.

On a related note, there was also a fourth Special Paint Boss Eliminator that was a Colorado DSO car, that was ordered earlier than the three previously mentioned. The stats I’ve gathered indicate there were less than 10 Special Paint Boss Eliminators built, and there are 7 currently recorded - although the actual paint colors for a few of them are still unknown.
