Four more YEARS!!!!!

The main problem I have will ALL poiliticians, federal AND state level, is that none of them know that the 10th ammendment of the Bill of Rights exists.
Obamacare should have been ruled as unconstitutional by the supreme court, just like many laws that pass. I have no problem with Romneycare, because that was done at the state level, but the federal government has no place making laws like this, per the Constitution and The Bill of Rights, not me.

I am a fiscal conservative myself, but do not consider myself a republican in the least. I could care less about the gay marriage debate, or the abortion issues (that is a topic that never ends well because people never change their opinions about it, I NEVER discuss this with friends or family, though I am against it personally). What I think that republicans and Dems alike should drop is the social garbage, or just meet in the middle and leave it alone. Either way, as stated above, social issues are not federal responsibilities, they should be left to the states, if they feel it is a big deal, then it can be addressed at the state level.

Article I, Section 8, Clause 1 gives the federal government the right to tax the citizens to promote the general welfare. So the 10th amendment would not be relevant when considering nationalized healthcare which would already be authorized by Article I.

I don’t think Mike was questioning the legality. I believe he was referring to the spirit in which the 10th amendment was written. Although no one can say exactly what the founding fathers intended, it certainly seems that they wanted to limit the power of the federal government. Being ruled by what they considered a tyrannical British King was still very much fresh on their minds.

But a law such as nationalized healthcare, which is clearly meant to be for the good of the American people, is probably exactly what they had in mind with their carefully chosen words “the general welfare”. What could possibly be more focused on welfare than legislation designed to provide the ability for Americans to retain their health?

And if you read it again, he did specifically say in his post that it should have been ruled unconstitutional under the 10th amendment, which considering Article I, it clearly shouldn’t.

On the contrary, not everyone is of the opinion that nationalized healthcare is in the best interest of the people. I had no issue with the healthcare coverage that my family and I have. So why would it be in my interest for the federal government to get involved? In fact I would go so far as to say that in a good portion of the time my family would be better off without the involvement of the federal government. The federal government has no business involving itself in the lives of it’s citizens beyond foreign policy, infrastructure and national defense. If people desire to live under a European type system where the government makes their decisions for them they should move to Europe. That is not what true Americans desire and not the principles our country was founded on.

Al is right, but general welfare kind of vague. I dont think that general welfare constitutes government healthcare.

I belive the the 10th was put in place to sort of create a self regulating government. 9 basic laws were put into place that all state had to abide by, then each individual state could adopt their own laws as the local politicians sees fit. If the constituants didn’t like it, they could protest (as allowed by the bill of rights), or leave the state for another, thereby taking population and tax dollars away. It would keep states from pissing people off too much and regulate government size. The problem with todays politicians is none of them do this, they are all just out for their wellbeing and power.

Al, Hamilton was on record as saying he thought even something such as education was what “general welfare” covered. If getting an education is covered but maintaining one’s health isn’t, that’s pretty absurd. And it’s not about what’s best for you personally, it’s about what’s best for the nation. Having access to quality healthcare, like first world countries do, is not just a “European” thing. It’s a modern first world country sort of thing. 5 weeks vacation from the day you start a new job, now that’s European!!

I don’t agree that education should be covered either. The Dept of Education should be abolished and it should be handled at the state level. And Hamilton was only one voice. Franklin wanted the turkey to be our national symbol. Not all of them had great ideas all the time.

A MESSAGE FROM THE QUEEN

To the citizens of the United States of America from Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

In light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately. (You should look up ‘revocation’ in the Oxford English Dictio
nary.)

Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except North Dakota, which she does not fancy).

Your new Prime Minister, David Cameron, will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections.

Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.

To aid in the transition to a British Crown dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:

  1. The letter ‘U’ will be reinstated in words such as ‘colour,’ ‘favour,’ ‘labour’ and ‘neighbour.’ Likewise, you will learn to spell ‘doughnut’ without skipping half the letters, and the suffix ‘-ize’ will be replaced by the suffix ‘-ise.’ Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up ‘vocabulary’).

  1. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as ‘‘like’ and ‘you know’ is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication. There is no such thing as U.S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell-checker will be adjusted to take into account the reinstated letter ‘u’’ and the elimination of ‘-ize.’

  1. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.

  1. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you’re not quite ready to be independent. Guns should only be used for shooting grouse. If you can’t sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist, then you’re not ready to shoot grouse.

  1. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. Although a permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.

  1. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left side with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.

  1. The former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline) of roughly $10/US gallon. Get used to it.

  1. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.

  1. The cold, tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. South African beer is also acceptable, as they are pound for pound the greatest sporting nation on earth and it can only be due to the beer. They are also part of the British Commonwealth - see what it did for them. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat’s Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.

  1. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English dialect in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one’s ears removed with a cheese grater.

  1. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies).

  1. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America. Since only 2.1% of you are aware there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket, and we will let you face the South Africans first to take the sting out of their deliveries.

13… You must tell us who killed JFK. It’s been driving us mad.

  1. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty’s Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).

  1. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 p.m. with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season.

God Save the Queen!

 Wearing my flame proof suit here.

What no mention of us having to dote over the royals like William and Kate? :buck:

I second that and what an improvement.

That is a perfect statement of the approach the Republican party needs to adopt. With that approach, Romney would have done better with women and young voters. A more thoughtful approach on immigration and he’d have done better with Hispanics. Put the two together and we’ might well be talking about President-elect Romney.

But, according to news reports I was still seeing yesterday, the conservative evangelicals want the Republicans to double down on the social issues. They’re saying that Romney’s failure to push those issues more forcefully is why he lost. So it would seem that the Republican base is still convinced that America just needs to hear their message presented the right way and all will be well.

Did you all see this!

Saw those, but those are petitions started by individuals, not by the state governments themselves. From what I understand on that site, anyone can start a petition, and if reaches the 25k signatures, it will get some kind of response from the WH…more than likely, a form letter.

I didn’t see those, but this has been making the rounds all over the net:

LMAO, now that’s funny. Wonder what % from both sides would just move to the one of their choosing…hypothetical wondering, that is.

As for “We get Hollywood…”…ummm…ok. LOL.

yeah I think I could stand to loose hollywood- can we give LA back? LOL

What is really Red, and what is really Blue…

Oklahoma… :beerchug:

Such a map gives the impression that a “reds” far outnumber “blues.” But it distorts by ignoring population density in favor of acreage.

This one adjusts the size of states to reflect population. We don’t vote based on acreage (well, I guess we do somewhat with the Electoral College)
