Help 68 X code Xr-7 Vin lookup

So my search for my green 67 S code xr7-gt 4 speed has gone no where and my S code 68 xr-7 gt is still a shell of its former self. I decided to buy a running gold X-code XR-7 with 62,814 miles that was from oregon and found its way to New Hampshire to have fun with.

I went yesterday to register it in New Jersey yesterday and had the DMV come back and say that the car was registered in NJ in 2005 with 155,000 miles on it and they were going to do a title investigation on it because i had said that the car had only 62,814 on it and the car didnt look like it had those kind of miles on it.

I have no paperwork on the car and really didnt do any investigation on the car before i bought it…(spur of the moment …my bad)
And I probably paid more for this car if it does have 162,000 on it.

Can anyone here look up the vin on this car to give me some info, so when the n.j. dmv comes calling i can have some proof of where this car has been.

1968 XR-7 Cougar 390 2bbl auto Gold with black interior no console

Thanks,

John

You might try explaining to them that these cars have odometers that can’t show beyond 99,999 as they have no “100,000” spot but simply roll over and possibly drving the car there or bringing photos to show them.

When I got the title transferred on my '68 I showed them a photo of my odometer and had them put 115,000 as claimed mileage as it is probably much closer to the truth than the 15,000 on the odometer.

It sounds like a po did the same thing I did and now your claim of 100,000 less it what set off the dot gestapo alarms.

You will way to contact Phil Parcels via www.CougarClub.org and see where the car was first reported to the National Database.

We also have a full VIN decoder available, on www.CougarClub.org

The national database shows your car reported by an owner in Nebraska? Is that you? The comments section show former owner as Russell Britt, 3328 SW Kirk Ave., Pendleton, OR 978001; 541-276-1192. Are you sure they didn’t look up 8F, as opposed to 8R? As both were built.

Nebraska? Not me, I’m trying to title it in New Jersey…
This car apparently has gotten around
The story I got from the guy I bought it from in newhampshire was that he bought it from a woman that bought it in Oregon then took it with her to new hampsire.
I don’t know how New Jersey or Nebraska got involved in this
Does anyone do car faxes on older cars?

.

That looks like a X code Cougar I say in Pendlton Oregon some time back. I think I reported it tot he data base at that time. It was at that time a nice looking car.

It’s still a nice looking car. I was just going to recover the drivers seat throw a rug in it and drive it for the summer… but nothing is ever that easy in my world…

I agree with Cougar 1 make sure they put in the correct vin. Not sure about NJ but in NY there is a box next to the mileage that states “exceeds mechancial limits” for cars with 5 digit odometers. Also in NY after 10 years mileage is exempt. Like said I would also take a pic of the odometer to show it could not read 155,000. and claim that if the vin was looked up correctly and mileage showed 155,000 it was a input error at DMV.
Good luck dealing with DMV

Have you had any issues with the DMV and your other Cougar? I’m sure everything will work out fine for you. I like the color of your X code.

The title investigator got back to me today and said the car cannot be titled as 62,814 as listed on the odometer. He said his records that he could not review with me points to the car having over 155,000 on it from a nj title in 2005. He varified he was imputing the correct vin
He did say I can title it in my name with true mileage unknown.
Then I can do my own research to find out what the car really is.
I joined the cougar club and I’m going to get a marti report on it.

My 68GT I titled in 1990 and my 67GT I sold to pay off my college debt.

It looks like you have quite the project with the 68GT. When did you take that picture? Has is changed much?

IMO, in real life, minus some serious and credible corroborating documentation, all old cars have 100,000 miles plus one them unless you can prove otherwise (or 200,000 or 300,000). Remember that, back in the day, these were the family car and often times the family only had 1 car (we did). I remember when my dad rolled over 100,000 in the '65 Mustang…and then 200,000 in it as well. There were not rips in the interior and it was in very nice condition at 200,000 miles (he was anal with his car care and maintenence). And to get anywhere in eastern Oregon, you’re going to drive really far, both ways! So your car was registered at 155K miles and now it has 162K+change (or 262K). That’s no big deal. In fact, if you were a seller, trying to sell me your car and claimed it has 62K original miles just because of it’s good condition, I’m going to inwardly roll my eyes at you and you lose some seller “street cred” points with me. Mileage really only matters in later model cars and the super special rare (documented) ones, anyway.

I have no problem with high miles, it was just not represented that way before I bought it. I probably could have paid less than the 10g I got it for, but it was a heart string buy…and worse now I have to now deal with the nj DMV.

Where in NJ are you ?

I believe “Deadstang” picked up the key word, “documented”. If there is no lifeline documentaion, it’s an up hill battle. Provenance is everything to prove true mileage.Otherwise , it’s all speculation, period. Good luck with whatever avenue you choose. Still a kick ass car…

I don’t think $10K is a bad deal at all for an eastern Oregon FE Cougar that looks that good. :sunglasses:

I was looking at the title for my 66 Mustang which just happens to be a NJ title. They have 3 mileage disclosure statements.
One says basically this reflects actual mileage
The next one states " I/We hereby certify that to the best of my/our knowledge the odometer has exceeded its mechanical limits and the reading started at zero again"
So if someone put down 55,000 on the top disclosure line the checked the line With the statement above DMV would note the mileage as 155,000.

As others have said unless you have maintiance records to prove mileage you really cant. The person you bought the car from may have not known the mileage issue either.
Its a nice looking car title it TMU or check the line above and enjoy the ride.
