I received the rebuilt clock with quartz movement from West Coast and the blue light diffuser domes were bubbled kind of bad. Well West Coast has sent me(for free) a set of new blue light diffuser domes yesterday for the clock but I went and picked up a new pack from NPD which is local for me. Seems Scott Drake is the reproducer of these blue light diffusers. Well to me the new Scott Drake light domed light diffusers are cobalt blue and the originals look like aquamarine(see picture #1). All the lights in my car match in color(ie…radio, heater control and instrument panel). The color currently is bluish green to me. I am worried about using the new repo diffusers for it may change the color of the clock and other instruments. After you pop out the old domes I think it breaks them and may be no going back without buggering and that is not what I do ever. Anyone know anything about this??? Thanks For any help
The diffusers are held by small screws. On my 69 i replaced all my diffusers and went LED at the same time. It was a while you’re in there kinda thing.
Is the color of light the same as old after the change over? And if don’t remember the older color all you have to do is compare to the color of radio(if original) and climate control.
If you look at the pictures the outer edges or mounting tabs of the domes are not exposed to much heat and the color is the same. Same goes for the radio and climate panel. Also these original domes are not fragile, they are not deteriorated, nor soft. The only bubbled domes I have are from the clock West Coast sent me. All the domes in the original clock and instrument panel are nice with no bubbles and colors are nice. I am keeping my original clock, I have to send in a core which I ordered one off Ebay and guess what? The clock I just received today has excellent domes. The first three pictures are from the clock I received today and the last two my original clock. I think many people have used hotter bulbs in the past to damage the domes and the 194 bulbs do not damage the domes. Whats the chance I have all these nice original domes?
The clock ones are different that dash ones as shown. Just heat up w/ lighter & push thru.
I reuse them as the clear blue one are too bright and distracting from that side of the dash. No need for LEDs if using the clear type ( Blue, Orange & Yellow?)
Do you have to glue the tips when reinstalling? I do like to keep things original, seems like the more modern stuff added to these old cars the less mojo they have. Thanks so much Bill, you seem to have the answers to a lot of my questions.
Glad I can help you & others. Try heating the tips & push back into place. heat the tip of a screwdriver & melt them. A dab of a glue will secure it if needed.
