Bill or whomever with the big time html techie knowledge, notice recently something new and weird going on with the links at MCnet? When you click them the address they go to is not the link but some pay-for-clicks intermediary which I guess eventually ends up at the link you intended to go to directly. It is using this sh!t: http://www.viglink.com/.
It is messing me up big time working with older, now broken links to pictures.
Don’t know how it “works” as a revenue generator; but it’s been going on for several months now, I’m surprised this is the first time Bob (or anybody else) noticed it. My security software - I’m a freak about unknown redirects on my Windows-based computers- regularly pops up a warning when it happens.
There was some discussion about it as I remember. Personally I find it annoying as hell. So it fits right in with the new site owners. I wish all the other regulars would just migrate over here full time.
There are a lot of ways to make money off a site, gimmicks to turn words in posts into ads, captions covering the bottom half of photos, and on and on. Obviously we are not doing this stuff here. If the money gets tight I will let everybody know but for now, with Jay and I working for free and the donations we get, we are okay.
The more you load up a site with ad stuff, the slower it gets to load, and the pages become cluttered with junk. So we want to avoid doing any of that if possible. The one thing we have to do is to include a few Google text ads so that Google will have a reason to index the site (so it gets included in search results). Those are over on the home page somewhere. If you don’t have Google ads, then it can take years to get Google to start indexing your site. Initially we put banner ads on the home page to jump start the process, but those were taken off once we could see that they had done the job of getting us listed.
