I have put a deposit on a car that I plan to resell. It’s a 68 XR-7 J code car. It does have some rust and will need the floors replaced. I’ve been looking around and prices are all over the place. I was thinking the car was easily worth $3-5k, but now I am not so sure, mostly due to the rust issues. It also does not have the original motor (but it is a 302 4v). I could still walk away from my deposit.
What would you guys say is the minimum value for such a car?
What are a list of options? That would go a long way on figuring a price. How bad is the rust, you mentioned floor pans but how about torque boxes, body panels? More pictures would also help figure a good price.

Not sure about options, besides power steering and AT. Dual exhaust (was that standard?). The trunk lid and hood have little to no rust. Rocker panels are showing rust bubbles. Sequential tail lights work. Console is missing. Bucket seats need redone. The drivers side door (maybe passenger too) is a replacement and does not have the correct door tag on it. Here’s another pic, was dual antenas an option? Seems to have a hole for a second antena opposite the drivers side one.
Passenger side looks the same. Looks to me like it went through a pretty decent restoration 20 years ago, and it’s ready to be done again.
Frame rails are solid. I don’t care if I don’t make a lot of money on it. To be frank, if I can get AT LEAST 2k for it (quickly) I’ll break even. Some of the extra parts it comes with I can use on my 65 Park Lane. I realize price is often a regional thing, and I’m in Arizona. That’s way cheap for Arizona, but then the car is from Nebraska. I will need to sell it quickly, as I have to borrow the money to get it.
I thought the J code was really rare when I gave him a small deposit, but now I see that it doesn’t add a lot of value to the car, particularly without the original motor.
Also, it includes an extra pair of 302 heads, that may be the original 302 4v heads (I don’t know how to tell), but need to be totally rebuilt.
For anyone interested, here’s pics of my 65 Park Lane. This car came from Washington State and also had some rust issues. I’ve been working on this car for over 2 years … so I don’t need another rust bucket to be fixing up, but it’s really hard for me to say no to this Cougar deal. Clear Nebraska title.
Parklane I’m not sure if you could turn it fast for 2k. It looks ok but there is a lot of work to do to get it right. If I was a buyer I’d pay 2 k at most in its current state. I might be way off base maybe someone else will chime in. If I was looking for a project I would look for a car that has all of its parts and original engine. Now it could be a great resto mod car, you just have to find the right buyer.

$2k no problem on the East Coast but it would strictly be a parts car on the West Coast. Once you grind past all those goobered on patches it is only going to get worse.
