We just got in our first shipment of the new reproduction steering wheel emblems for 1967! They look sweet. The main difference from the originals is that you can’t really see the background texture on the new ones. It’s there, but much more subtle and gets lost in the black background. See comparison pictures on our website. Regardless of that difference, they look a lot better than most tired, worn-out originals.
While we were at it, we made a quick video to show how to remove your old emblem and install this new one. You may be a little surprised by the methodology, but it’s the easiest way we found to do it without damaging the center pad. We also show how to replace the chrome trim ring, which is also reproduced. See steering wheels & parts on our site here: http://www.cougarpartscatalog.com/stwhpa.html
Is the chrome trim ring available on the website? I need that more than the emblem itself. Or is that an item that is better to get refinished locally?
I also managed to pull my emblem out, clean it and reinstall it. The magic tool that made the job A LOT easier: A tea spoon. No sharp edges to cut the vinyl, and it got right behind the emblem and popped it out easily. Putting it back in was just a slow process of using nothing but even pressure and a lot of massaging the vinyl as I went just like Don showed.
That looks awesome! The tea spoon idea is good, especially as an alternative to smashing the bajeepers out of the emblem. Your original emblem looks to be in great shape, glad you saved it!
