New owner of a ‘68 Cougar - in the UK!!

Hi Randy, thanks for the info- I’m sure those would be valuable contacts!

Thanks again👍

Yes I should be active on here with all the shenanigans! loving the white 69 there!

Yes it sure will! There are heaps of early mustangs here but not all that much cougars.
Thanks!

Always cool to see these cars make their way around the world. Congrats and have fun! Looks like a good solid car. I’m guessing your friends are either jealous or think you’re crazy.

Your correct there, they all think I’m mad but I can tell are dead jealous haha

Thought some might catch that. A few hardware details suggested that the car was assembled at San Jose but the thing that gave it away was the San Jose paint inspector stamp visible in the engine compartment shot - passenger side cowl outward of the hood ground

For the owner be very very careful around the stamping. It will wipe away with ease. If you try take good pictures first since it its disappears someone may want to know who’s name it is at some point and pictures normally work better than memory - even a 19 yr olds memory

Looks like the inspector for the unibody part of the process might have be JACKSON

Would also guess that the car was built later in the year as compared to an earlier 68 Cougar assembled at San Jose

Ok Jeff, thank you. So is the inspector stamp a different size? Font? Location? Or? Now what makes you say it is a later built car?

Randy Dearborn in 68 didn’t use an ink stamp to indicate that the paint had been inspected on the unibody. Typically they used stick on square (don’t use those ones with the rounded corners  stickers that had the inspectors numbers stamped through them or name printed on them expect for one fill in worker that didn’t do many cars - so odd to find him working that job assignment. He used the old “baseball” diamond (as we refer to it) style than was used back in 64-65 Dearborn production. Likely when he worked that spot and he just kept the stamp and insisted on using it years later when he filled in.

I’m guessing late based on when that style of stamp was used at San Jose in 68 as there were three versions of stamp style used during that production year and I’ve kept pretty good records of those over the years

Hope this explains my thought process on the subject

Thanks for the explanation Jeff. Being on the east coast I see very few San Jose built cars. Even when I started messing with Cougars 30+ years ago I saw very few where the stickers were still in place. Thanks again.

Thanks for the heads up on that Jeff. Will be careful on that and will snap a shot ASAP.

James .

Welcome to the cougar Community James. It’s always good to see the younger generation share our love for these cars. Certainly looks like you have a keeper.

It is so nice to see someone younger into one of my favorite cars ever. We need more younger people interested in all collectible cars to keep this hobby going. Thanks James. Have fun with it

Thanks! She sure is a keeper…

Thanks, I sure will!

Hey James, welcome from a fellow British Cougar owner. I live in LA now and good ones are hard to find even here in sunny SoCal, so it looks like you’ve done really well.

Have you thought about taking it to this year’s Goodwood Revival? It’s the best classic car gathering in Europe and a fun day out - beautiful setting, great vintage racing and you’ll see some incredible old cars from all over the world. They also have a big field where ticket holders can display their own classics (worth checking, but I think anything tax exempt qualifies). I don’t recall ever seeing a Cougar there so I’m sure yours would get a lot of attention!

Yes I have, hopefully will attend in years to come. Currently going through getting her through the MOT - not that there will be any problems as everything works par a few small electrical gremlins…

Hi James.
Another UK owner here from Leicester.
My sister lives in Ivybridge, so I’ll keep my eyes open for you when ever I’m down that way!
By the way, WCCC are very helpul at shipping bits to the UK and are cheaper and quicker than you might expect.

Small world. I live around 2 minutes away from Ivybridge. Would love to see your Merc!

James.

You don’t go to the dentist in Ivybridge and see either John or my sister Kerry?
If you do, don’t mention my name until treatment is finished unless you like pain!

Haha. I actually go to a dentist in Plympton, just down from Ivybridge .
How’d you find driving left hand drive on our roads? I’ve only driven mine a couple times on trade plates😬
