Oil pressure sending unit question

This past week I had to replace the oil pressure switch on my Cougar. I stopped at NAPA auto parts to pick up a new sending unit. They had a listing for three types for the 390. Of course I purchased the wrong one and had to make a return trip to get the correct part. Why three different sending units? I am just guessing, standard unit, XR-7 and ???
