Old AC removal concern

Hi have a '70 Cougar that has not run in 14 years. Further, the AC did not work when I bought the car in 1987.

I would like to remove the AC unit to more easily work on the engine, but I’m concerned about the freon issue . . . .

Is it dangerous to just disconnect after all these years of the AC never working, or do I need a professional to empty the system?

Since the car does not run, I cannot simply drive to a garage.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,

DOB

Can you hook a gauge up to it to see if there is any pressure on the system? If yes; it has freon, if no pressure, then no freon to worry about.

Thanks for the response. We’ll give a try.
