Position of Courtesy Lights - 69 / 70 Coupe

I have a pair of Don’s super dooper sail panels to go in the Eliminator

I figure that since I have them out I could put in some rear courtesy lights. Unfortunately I don’t have another set of XR7/decore panels to use as a pattern

Could someone help with the position and dimensions of the hole for the courtesy lights.

I need the following dimensions
A - horizontal distance along the lower edge from the lower front corner to the centre of the hole for the lights
B - vertical distance from the lower edge to the centre of the light cut-out - measured from where the centre line disects the lower edge
diameter of the cut-out for the lights

A picture would help - particularly if the hole isn’t circular

There is a small flat area that angles towards the back and measures 7/8". The photo names relate to which side they go to. Most photos were from 1970 panels , last 2 from 69.Top of bulb points towards flat area.If you need additional pix lemme know…

Tools needed

  • 45mm hole saw
  • modelling knife
  • ruler
  • square
  • pencil

Mark out the centre of the hole

Dimension A - Horizontal = 210mm
Dimension B - Vertical = 100mm
Hole diameter = 45mm (1 3/4")

Carefully cut out the hole with hole saw. Go slowly so you don’t cut through the vinyl

Do a test fit

Make cuts in the vinyl working from the centre to the edge of the hole to create segments. Fold over and glue to back of hole

Fit the light unit

Test fit into position on c pillar

Great post Leon. This should be in the “How To” section.

Great work Leon, looks very nice

Update. There isn’t enough metal available to hold the sail panel in place with tape if you aren’t able to get the vinyl wrapped around the pinchweld under the rear window rubber. tried to hold it in place with double sided trim tape but that didn’t work as there isn’t enough metal available with the sound deadening pad in place. Had to put a small mush head screw into the top edge to hold the sail panel in place.

Flash makes the screw stand out but it is a black headed screw and doesn’t show up in natural lights

Wish I’d run a piece of black tape up along the window seal so the body colour isn’t showing
