Reasonable 14" Whitewall Tire Options in 2021

And a picture of mine two days after I took factory delivery in April 1970. Bias ply Uniroyal Tiger Paws. Obviously not a high quality camera:

Uniroyals from the factory - interesting! Remember Uni, Roy, and Al from the ads?

I haven’t seen these discussed. The stripe is a tad wider than I’d prefer, but the graphics aren’t excessively loud or modern looking otherwise. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cok-700408

Good call, those do look pretty good. I guess that’s the issue people are raising here - is “pretty good” acceptable? I’m sure it is for a lot of folks here.

Andrew, You have a very specific vision for your car and you’ve been working on that for years. Is this really the time to veer from that over a few hundred dollars? If you aren’t positioned to spend the money on the “right” tires at this moment, just wait until you’ve saved up and get the tires you know you really want. Anything else will be wasted money because you will likely end up replacing the replacements with the ones you originally wanted anyway.

Don’t remember that one. I vividly remember this one:

Love it!

Simple Green didn’t touch the dingy whitewall. I found the discussion on the Corvette forum and concluded the carbon black rubber must have bled through the white rubber, or at least contaminated it somehow.

So, what do you do when you have bleed through? Get a latex (rubber) primer then a top coat. So I first wiped down the “white” stripe with isopropyl alcohol. That softened the surface a little, used a foam brush trimmed to the whitewall width, and primed the stripe. Since the stripe is raised no mask is needed. I used Kilz latex primer. After that dried I used a coat of gloss white latex exterior paint. Followed by a second coat. Those whitewalls look nice.

I hope it infused/adhered to the surface. I’ve driven them about 40 miles so far. I’ll see how well it holds up.

My neighbors already think I’m nuts. I’m sure the site of me laying on the driveway painting my tires removed any doubt.

Hey, Andrew.

Just saw this thread. I’m very happy with my Uniroyal Tiger Paws – they are getting old and will soon need to be replaced, even though I’ve hardly used any of the tread.

One thing that mattered to me when I selected these that I think others haven’t considered: the age of tires. Those Tiger Paws on my '68 replaced a set of 16-year old Michelins that I LOVED. However, they had gotten hard with age and were getting pretty noisy. My car spends most of it’s life covered in a garage here in the Bay Area, so those MIchelins were not checked or cracked, and did not look their age until you read the date of manufacture. They still had 80% or so of their tread left.

When I went to replace them, I searched around and the Tiger Paws were the only reasonably priced WSW tire that was somewhat close to the originals. They are still available, and I will likely get another set in the next year or so. The existing tires don’t have more than 5-7K miles, and the tread looks almost new. I feel less guilty (or less remorseful? Something else"?) disposing of what look like nearly new tires for another new set for safety reasons. Though I don’t often take it on long trips, I always want my car to be safe and ready.

Also: I always replace the spare when I buy new tires. The last two had/have never been on the ground. But they go too.

Welp, thanks everyone for the input. I finally bit the bullet and ordered a set of Diamondback DB III’s with a 3/8" white stripe, spaced 1-1/2" from the rim. Should be slightly more inboard than the red GT-E example I posted, I decided those looked a little too far out to me. It’ll take around 5 weeks or so for them to be made and delivered, so I’ll post an update of course, maybe in my Snowball thread to show the wheels and all. Total cost with shipping and everything ended up around $1,200. Ouch! But you guys are right that with everything I’ve done to this point, might as well get what I want. I hope I like them

Good Man! It’s been a while since I spent someone else’s money. Just ask Mo, T3, mo2872, whatever…

Good choice on the Diamondback tires. Based on the recommendations from R.B. Phillips and Local Hero from a previous post I went with the Diamondbacks also. Mine are 15" on Legendary Flat 5’s and the whitewall is spaced outward 2".

Don’t know why imy photo is upside down. Oh well, here is a close up of the tire, possibly upside down also, we’ll never know.

Nice 19cougar68! Those look great, thanks for the pics. Makes me feel good about the choice.

SweeeeeeeT! Great choice, Andrew! These look so classy!

I"m looking forward to seeing photos as well, Andrew.

That’s going to be one beautiful Cougar!

Just thought I should update this thread, even though it’s a little redundant, for anyone in the future looking for whitewall tire options. Here is how the Diamond Back tires turned out. They look fantastic to me! I’m happy with the 1.5" stripe spacing from the rim rather than 2" shown in previous examples in this thread, which looked just a little far out in my opinion.

I’ll post more pics when they are on the car and everything. In the end I’m glad I spent the extra coin for exactly what I wanted.

I agree on the 1.5” vs. 2” mounting edge to whitewall distance. Those sidewalks look very close to what I remember back in the day. Anxious to see them mounted on those good looking wheels!

No matter what tires you buy it’s never a waste of money because you can always do burnouts with them when you finally spend the money to buy the tires you want. Burnout are never a waste of money!
