Rust treatments

Got my dash pad off yesterday. I have some rust to deal with. The metal strip that the defroster vents attach to along the bottom edge of the windshield is rusted through on the corners. I would like to hear some approaches to dealing with this issue. This is my first “restore” job I have ever attempted. Here is my plan. First use Eastwood rust treatment, then Eastwood rust encapsulator. After that Bondo liquid metal (I think that is the name of it) the stuff with aluminum in it… fair that in flat. Then more rust encapsulator to match the rest of the treatment… what do you think good approach? This car is going to be a occasional driver. I don’t plan on it being a show car.

I’ve heard guys say that rust encapsulator works. To me you aren’t fixing anything you’re just covering it up. I’m too old school to use it.

I would have to agree…if you can find a “not worth saving” donor, and have that section cut out, and graft it into your car, I think you’d be headaches ahead in the long run. But, it’s your car, so…do what works for you!

You can’t fix holes (with any hope for it to last) with anything that you mix up and goop on, period. Regarding rust removal/encapsulation, the only real way to deal with this is to sandblast the cancer out and then fix it the right way, with new metal welded in. So sayeth the ECI.
