Shiny New Repro Parts... '67 horn pad & '73 hood emblems!

We just got in some new samples the other day and I had to snap some glamour shots! Keep in mind these won’t be available to the public for some time; these are just the initial samples from the manufacturer.

First, the much-needed center emblem for the 1967 horn pad.

Next, the center hood / grille emblems for the 1973 Cougar. Both the XR7 and Standard running cat versions will be made.

Me like shiny…

Coming on Monday: Comparison pictures between these and original parts, and we’ll talk about any differences that arise. Until then, drool away!

Shiny is good, just disappointed that the 67 horn pad isn’t accurate. Oh well…Will the lens be proper? Or just flat stock?

What are the 73 emblems going for? I have a friend that, from what i can remember needs one. Not sure if its an xr7 or the standard. Im thinking standard. For the standard is that emblem correct?, Just wondering, I haven’t seen one before.

I have a ‘spare’ NOS '73 XR-7 hood emblem, and will take a pic if you need one for reference.

Nice emblems for the '73! I could see myself going for one; but my XR-7 emblem is somehow the ONLY EMBLEM ON THE CAR that’s in decent shape. Now, when it comes time to address the sail panel emblems, I’ll be whining (sp) for help there.

Of course, there’s still rust repair, dent repair, paint, engine/drivetrain work, suspension, brakes, steering… it’s gonna be a while!

Keep in mind these are prototypes and will be sent back for revisions. The lens on the 67 horn pad emblem is in fact convex as original. When you look at the emblem from the back side you will notice the emblem does in fact have the pebble grain but when you look at it from the front it is hard to see as they applied the paint to thick. Hopefully the finished product will have the details refined.

For comparison, here’s an original 67 horn pad emblem next to the new prototype. Main differences are that there is no pebble grain on the new one, and the cat looks slightly less detailed. Also the COUGAR font and outer rings may be a hair thicker on the new one. All said, it looks pretty good, but hopefully they can at least get the background texture right.

Wow…the hood emblem for the 73 XR-7 looks awesome!! I am ready to purchase. Please keep me updated.

The background really needs that texture. I hope you can twist their arm a little bit and get them to do that right.

How do you get that horn pad off? Mine is in much need of a de-funking behind it.

Grab horn pad and turn counter-clockwise about an 1/8th turn.

The horn pad has three tabs on it that engage the horn ring. To remove the pad, hold the steering wheel and rotate the pad (counter clockwise I think), and it will come right off. I also recommend removing the negative battery cable or at least unplugging the horns.

That was way too easy. I was expecting to need to go buy a special tool.

I am liking this car more and more every day. All I need is a flat head and phillips screwdrivers, and set of standard wrenches to take the whole car apart.

Tell that to the pitman arm!!

and a BFH, there, that covers pitman arm removal.

I used to hang out on a Mustang Forum that had as one of its stalwarts an elderly gent known as SuperDave, who was The Guru on fixes for the 65-66 models; always using the FORD methods of service. Often, he reccomended the use of a BFH - but insisted that it was a Big FORD Hammer.

He also had a list of 8 “timeless wisdoms”; pertaining to the care and feeding (and sometimes the modification) of old Mustangs. Then he once posted a colorful description of how to check for a water pump front seal leak; without unduly offending the water pump… this was by far the least-serious, funniest stuff he’d ever written, and there was question if he did indeed post it. He admitted to same, and stated quite plainly that the procedure was correct in every detail; and it became his NINTH “Timeless Wisdom”.

Imagonna have to search in the archives for that post.

SuperDave’s timeless wisdom:

1- “Rust never sleeps!”
2- “Given enough time and enough money, anything is possible.”
3-“Never say a job is easy until after you have finished it.”
4- “Cheap ain’t good and good ain’t cheap.”
5- “Just because a part is “new” doesn’t mean it is good: VERIFY it!”
6- "Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance:PPPPPP
7- "When in doubt, RTFM! (read the FORD manual)
8- “A little Bondo and a little paint can make a Mustang what it ain’t.”

Those eight bits of wisdom are priceless.

Hey, ahunt I didn’t know there were any Stangnetters living closer to me than Phoenix or San Diego!

I tried poking through the archives for the “weep-hole” thread; apparently it too was lost in the “Great Server Crash of 2004”. Bummer; as that was the best tech article (from an entertainment standpoint, even if it truly was a complete in-car diagnosis of the water pump) in the entirety of that Forum.

Don’t post on there all that often anymore; although Fritz, Dan and I get bored now and then and drop in on the Classics Talk page, just to see which of the other Closet/Gutter denizens we can wake up.
