You may not want to throw that around a forum filled with a bunch of Ford guys. ![]()
If we’re talking about brand X cars, I like the Levi’s edition Gremlin. That and, wait a second… It’s time for my mid day dose of Lithium. I still like the idea of a stroked 409, though.
Friend built this - runs full LS drivetrain from Commodore (Chev) SS

A 69 std coupe, Q code with hub caps, gold on gold is a sleeper in its purest form. Not one clue of what is under the hood from the factory.
I concede on the 350 Rocket not being a big block. My Chevy knowledge is lacking, and I’m not embarrassed about it. ![]()
I don’t consider the 400 as a big block either. 396/409/454/455 is about it.
I think most people consider the 400 poncho a big block. That being said, and I could be wrong, but don’t most pontiacs from the 70’s share the same outer dimensions? My friend that had the Cougar before Dad has a couple of nice Fairlanes (that’s what he’s into and still has his GT390 as well as a 428 and 427 Fairlane), but has a '69 LTD that is a copper/brown metallic that is a beautiful car that would make a great sleeper. Big, beautiful, understated, and room for a big block.
I love this post. It has brought about some great “bench racing”.
blue68cat: I want to see pix of your car when it’s done! ![]()
PM me your email. I’m planning on documenting the process.
The most interesting sleeper I have heard about is a 66/67 era country squire wagon: 427 dual quads with four on the floor, specially ordered from the factory. I read about it on the Internet, so it must be true.
Oh to have something like that to cruise the boulevards…
That is an awesome green wagon! Love the sunvisor.
If any of you have the chance to visit Floyd Garrett’s Muscle Car Museum in Severville, TN don’t pass it by. There are a lot of great cars, but one the piqued my interest, even though I’m not a Chevy fan, was a stark white Impala station wagon complete with the faux wood grain side paneling. A closer look and there it sat with a 427 Tri Power 4 Speed, and the old window sticker, build sheet, etc. Paperwork can be faked, and being that I don’t know much about old bow tie cars, there’s no telling if it is a legit factory car or a build, but still interesting.I don’t know if that car is still there as they rotate cars in and out, but there are some pretty cool cars, old AFXers, superstock, etc., of all, brands, as well as the Challengers used in the Vanishing Point remake.
Funny that you talk about this. I am taking my 69 Q-code convertible to auction and the theme we are working on for the show board is “Sleeper”. Her personalized license plate is (SLEEPER). Would one of you English majors want to write up a definition as you would see in a dictionary. That would work on the show board. Thanks guys.
Sure. Sleeper-A car that is built to appear mundane, yet be surprisingly fast. 2. A car that runs entirely on Secanol. 3. A person whose significant other constantly has a headache. 4. Someone who is no longer among the living.
Back to the original topic always partial to some put out by Mercedes.
Long history of stuffing big power in sedans and wagons. Example is the 2007 Mercedes-Benz R63 AMG. Wagon with a 500HP 6.2L
I agree with the definition of a sleeper, the quintessential example being a rodded station wagon, but the other day someone said something that made me think there may be a yet another definition.
My wife had someone over and that blocked me in right before I was leaving so we did the car tango. The lady told me with an astonished look “I didn’t think that thing ran!”
I think the busted back window or rusted out fenders threw her off. It looks really bad in daylight as there are 7 coats of paint peeking through a very thin layer of black.
Just saw this.
LOVE it!
