Hi, found this old thread while googling around for related info so didn’t want to go start another new one.
Took the car out yesterday for a bit and on the way home, a new noise/sound started out of nowhere. Had someone with me and we could both hear it coming from front passenger side. Once it started, it continued to increase in frequency and at any speed as low as 1-3mph on up to 25-35mph. no holes or bumps required, it would do it even on flattest asphalt straight rolling. Best described as a sharp, fast ‘KONK’. Hearing it and not knowing whatsup now with steering or suspension, I drove off the main roads slowly thru the park and back to the garage. When it cooled down, I had someone grab the core support and top edge of wheel opening area, I laid under the car with the oversize screwdriver as stethoscope. Had them push down gently 2x, then rapidly jerk the car straight up, each time the sound appeared. I was able to verify it touching the screwdriver to the frame mount with handle to my ear. as well felt it thru my finger when he would jerk the car straight up again.
This ‘68 has alot of new parts for suspension & steering replaced last year, including all bushings as well as U/L control arms +more. but here i found original rods with replaced bushings and they dont look so hot already, maybe even partly installed wrong. After reading your posts, ordered the K8157 Moog kit from RA and also a new pair of strut rods.
Not as familiar here with some suspension work, so thought best to ask you guys before touching anything. Moog kit does not show the large center washer at all, but my car has it installed. Most google images of people’s cars showed it on the rear side, mine is on the front? then some cars had new parts but no center washer? On mine, both cupped outer washers facing in to eachother, but on Moog it looks like they want the rear facing out back towards the interior. (attached pics for ref) Would you want me to leave out that center washer, or to use it again, if yes… front or rear side? will measure and mark the threads spot to get close to where the nuts are right now and torque as well.
Do you guys think I’m on the right track for the described sound. If it’s still there after this work, will then need investigate that further. but no regret as it’s quite nasty down there and i’ll feel better having replaced those original rods and towards eventually a refresh/restore of the whole underside for safety and appearance.
