The Sports Thread

So, is there anyone interested in sports as well as Cougars? Thought maybe if so, a ‘sports’ thread might be fun. As for me, although I don’t have nearly the time to follow everything as much as I would like, I have loved sports all my life. The obvious, as T3 already knows, I am a die hard WVU Mountaineer fan no matter the sport. (Go 'EERS!! ). As for other college teams, have also liked the University of Arizona Wildcats since living in AZ. And last but certainly not least in college sports, I’m an ABC fan—Anybody But Carolina LOL!!! Baseball would be the Baltimore Orioles all the way. Have liked them ever since the days of Boog Powell, Brooks Robinson, Jim Palmer, etc. etc… Since living my teen years in Az, the Phoenix Suns are my NBA team. Still remember the turn around shot Gar Heard hit to send the game into (I believe) a second OT with the Celtics in the championship series. Really thought they were gonna beat Boston that year… As for the NFL, I’m really mixed up. Have been a Jets fan ever since the Namath days. remember (vaguely) the Namath ‘guarantee’ before the game… Unfortunately, remember the panty hose commercial too… However, I also like the Pats and Bills which just about guarantees me a team in the playoffs every year!! Living in the South, I also enjoy NASCAR. Don’t really have any favorites there as for drivers. I always root for whoever is in a Ford. Really like Mark Martin but won’t root for him if he’s side by side with a Ford for the lead…

So, how about everyone else? Follow any sports big time?..

Not anymore, but i did play olympic handball, and no one even knows what that is anymore. must be getting old :sigh:

Not completely familiar with the term ‘olympic’ handball, but used to absolutely love to play handball and racquetball in my younger days. While living in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area in my late teens/early twenties, used to drive over to the ASU courts and play until the wee hours of the morning…
Thanks
Chuck

ps: or are you saying you played handball for the olympic team??? :open_mouth:

Well, Chuck, i was a racketball player, and you’re getting old too if you know what handball is
Olympic Handball is also known as team Handball, like a mix between soccer and basketball.

all of the above are great to play.

Yep.that’s me—gettin OLD…

We use to play 2 on 2 handball. Back in the day would play for hours on end. Would be lucky to play 5 minutes now…

LOL!!! I need an immoderators or someones help!!! Uhm… the thread title needs to be changed to read Thread please!!!
Thanks!!
Chuck

Must be the 'eer getting to you!

I love sports! I used to play softball, volleyball and soccer, but the body is falling apart now so I just coach. I coached my sons flag football teams (they are playing tackle now). I coach my daughters soccer team. As for my teams, I grew up in the shadow of Univ. of Maryland so I am a Terp fan and have been since the 60’s. I like football and the Redskins, hate the Cowboys/Giants/Eagles! I like multiple players on different teams and root for them until they play the Skins. I really like to see good games for the most part will watch even the worst teams if it is a good game. I like college sports and since my wife went to Univ of Virginia I am a Cavalier fans as well. I HATE Virginia Tech!!! My wife’s brothers and a sister-in-law went there so bragging rights go to the victors (Lately VT) I perfer college basketball, but has starting losing interest since the players do not stick around for long. As for baseball I was/am a Senators fan Frank Howard was my hero. When they left for Texas I became a Rangers fan as well. I liked the O’s as well and my Aunt used to have Brooks Robinson over to her house when he was a spokeman for Crown gasoliine. I like the Caps in hockey, I just wish they would live up to the hype.

My favorite sport is soccer, my teams are DC United, USA National teams and the German National team (The Dutch as well, until the last WC final). Hate the Italians, Spain, Portugal and any of the South American teams (Not really true, I just hate the “diving and faking injury” members of these teams). I annoy my kids all the time when I find a game on TV.

Paul

Dang, Paul, you lost me at “Eagles”…Cowboys and Giants, I can agree with…

FLY, EAGLES, FLY!!!

Love soccer here, as well.

Oh, and just for Chuck…BOOOOMER SOOOONER!!!

Well Im on board with football, hockey and maybe some baseball, gerw up a Bears fan here ( I know…I know) but I actually cant pinpoint a Favorite team ( as long as its not Green Bay, Im ok) - its a draw back I think from playing fantasy football for years.
Cant watch college football - otherwise id never get anything done if I get into it.

We’ll leave the thread title correction to Big Boss Bill.

As for sports… I, too, am a NASCAR fan. I’ve been following it since it was on Wide World of Sports in the 70s and paired up with women’s figure skating or some such thing in the same episode. Once we got cable in 1987, I followed it more closely and every week. Since then I’ve been to about 25 or 30 races.

I was a die-hard Bill Elliott fan back in his heyday and even got to meet him once. I was to his shop when he owned his own team sponsored by McDonalds. The shop was later sold to Ray Evernham and later yet to Richard Petty. I also visted Bill’s hometown in Dawsonville, GA and ate lunch at the pool hall where I also got to meet his brother Dan. Dan used to be his tire changer and other brother Ernie was the crew chief on the family owned team.

Now that Bill is retired, I pull for Ryan Newman no matter what he drives. He’s not a prima-dona whiner and crybaby like all the other drivers. He also graduated Purdue U with my cousin and is also a car guy himself who likes to work on his own stuff.

Lately I’ve become disenchanted with the whole NASCAR thing with the constant rule changes and the Chase thing. It’s nothing like it used to be.

Ouside of racing, I play softball and volleyball and coach little league baseball. But more recently I’ve become addicted to local high school football because the kids play for the sheer love of the game.

Yep… played a little church and business league… left and center fields but couldn’t hit worth a lick!! Must be improving with age…LOL!!!

And thank you Bill for the thread correction!!!

Cant watch college football - otherwise id never get anything done if I get into it.

With both OU and OSU in the top ten, I can feel that old addiction creeping back over me. I swear it can take over your soul… Sure was fun watching Texas getting beat twice this year!

I am the guy that put the H back in thread… it was FM i tell ya. F’ng Magic!

I knew we had the right guy for the job.

I love you. You just made me love you. Baltimore native here. Even if the team has sucked for ten years I’ll still back my O’s. Although, it has been easier and easier to ignore baseball sometime around the beginning of May. Raider fans said that their team wouldn’t be great again until after Al Davis was gone. I’m of the firm belief that the Orioles won’t be good again until Angelos is gone.

In the meantime, and because it is the season, I’m loving my 1st place Ravens. Week 1 was like the Superbowl to me. They could suck for the rest of the year as long as they beat the Steelers twice this year (or three times if Pittsburgh gets its act together)

In any case, first round is one me if we ever meet up.

Followed Formula 1 for many years. Don’t get involved in much other sport, except occasional V8 Supercar racing

LOL!!! Grew up in the Princeton , WV area. Neighboring Bluefield was a rookie league affiliate of the Orioles. Doug Decinces, Eddie Murray, Don Baylor, Bobby Grich, Dave Johnson, and others got their start there and I got to see them! Two favorites (and man I wish I had gotten their autographs back then) that I got to see make their debut in the summer of '78 when we went home for the summer, where Cal Ripken Jr and Mike Boddicker. I met Brooks Robinson at a mall in Phoenix, and actually delivered a pizza to Jim Palmer at a hotel in Phoenix. Those were the days!! LOL!!! I have a feeling it will be a long time before the Orioles see the likes of those guys again, at least when in their prime… :imp: Even sadder is the fact that Bluefield was the longest affiliated to one team club in all of baseball. The Orioles stopped the affliation after 2010 and now they are the Bluefield Blue Jays!!! 53 seasons down the drain. Sad…Very Sad.May never go to a Bluefield game again… Just ain’t the same…
