The Unicorn: Factory 427 non GT-E, with AC ... WTFO?

I will be interested as to the rear axle ratio this car came with.

I have a scan of the Marti report that I hope to put up soon. The plot thickens… (need to get permission)

ooo ooo ooo Can’t Wait !

That would be cool to see. Hope you can post it.

I’m turning blue from holding my breath…Did you not get an OK ?

You ( and a lot of others) must be turning purple by know.

So here it is…

I am completely convinced this was not a GT-E.

The GT-E and GT option could be order on either a code 91 Standard, or a Code 93 XR-7. Either package appeared in the list of options for the car. There is no GT-E option listed for this car.

Now for the next question, Would you rather have this car or a GT-E?

Colors NOT available on the GT-E were:

M Polar White
6 Fawn
O Sea Foam Green
W Saxony Yellow

Designated ā€œRetailā€, meaning customer ordered.

I wonder if Kevin Marti has any of the Ford information regarding any of the ā€˜special order numbers’. You know, the information provided to originate Special Order XXXX.

Great detective work…Unbeleivable find ! I would love to have it,but still prefer a GTE !

I do know that you have omitted the VIN# but does it end with 9893 ? :unamused:

No, 9863 is the DSO item number.

OK. Just found this; http://saacforum.com/index.php?topic=11784.0

I never knew Polar white wasn’t a paint option on the GT-E. I think it would look kind of cool with the Argent silver bottom trim paint. If I had to choose between this car or a GT-E I’d sway towards this one. In XR7 trim with no GT badges or anything it’s the ultimate sleeper Cat. I bet it has turned quite a few heads!! All it needs is a 4 speed.

Since the impossible is clearly some tines possible… then wouldn’t the 4 speed have been just the perfect thing to set this off? Of course, the real problem with that is that there was a 427 C6 assembly that they could install, but not a 427 top loader assembly. (Engine and transmissions were assembled as one unit)

Yes it too bad none of the 427 cars were offered with an optional toploader 4sp. :sunglasses:

Being that I do restorations, I see this all the time and these cars seam to surface for some strange reason. The nice thing is You have the invoice to prove the clame and it would be interesting to see if the Marti report lines up. There have been some cars that this was not the case do to changes after the order was placed.
I knew of a car that was a G but did not show up on the report as such. The strange thing was it was never toughed, still owned by the origional owner and had all the stuff. The owner was the CEO of Hurtz rent a car in 1968. His wife wanted one, so he made a call and Mercury delivered it.
Great story!

I am a huge sucker for the back story… I am fascinated by the people who bought any of these cars when new, why they made the purchase, what they thought of the car, how they liked it… or not. The stories are what makes this history instead of just machinery.

So is this car still known to exist and if so has someone actually seen it recently ?

There are arrangements being made to see the car and get pictures. It will be a while, perhaps a month or so, before we get any details.
