Merry Christmas.
Has anyone replaced the switches with push on/push off type switched?
I
I remember seeing pictures here or on VFM of a cougar dash with them installed.
Thanks,
Jim
Sounds like a cool project. Just need a latching push button that can carry whatever current load. Lots of latching push buttons in the world but I wonder if there’s any vintage looking options?
The toggle switches are so period correct… not sure it would look right without them.
In my first Cougar, a 1967 standard that I drove to high school in the early 1970’s, I installed an XR-7 dash with headphone jacks in the end spots with toggle switches in the center two spots. I have never installed push button switches but it sounds like a neat idea. Post pics when you are done.
Can anyone measure the hole in the XR7 dash that the toggle switches sit in?
I’m hoping they are 5/8 of an inch.
Thanks,
Jim
The holes are 1/2” but could easily be enlarged to 5/8”.
Dang Royce I remember that! surprised the cops didn’t stop us…
Very easy to do, hardest part would be finding a switch you like. Also could use those spaces for indicator lights if you don’t have a need for a switch. One thing I noticed is a lot of the push button style switches do not carry much current so you will likely need to run a relay.
I didnt find a switch I liked at the time so I used regular toggles, they are 15-30amp rated so no need for relays either. One of the slots I have a knob for my power steering assist.
I like the look of the toggles. Do they have a halo ring that lights up when turned on?

Does anyone know how to wire the C pillar and courtesy toggle switches? I have a nice color wiring diagram for 1967 XR7, which is very helpful. I’m assuming I may need two SPDT switches and two SPST switches for the map lights. Looks like green with yellow trace is power for all four lights. any insight would be welcome, thanks.

They do not light up. What you’re seeing is a painted washer. It helps hold the wrap in place around the switch
Are converting a standard to XR7? Some standards had the optional C pillar opera lights.
If so you need to get the two schematics next to each other and see how they wired those lights.
I don’t think there was a law against using headphones in a car but there should have been.
We use to install those in cruising vans all the time. We used a very early inverter to home audio in those vans.
My standard had the opera wiring already in place. Just had to install the lights
I’m not converting this is an XR-7. I found a switch I like but it only comes in a SPST, which should work for the two map lights. I need some help with the wiring for the C pillar and and kick panel lights.
In that case you are going to need to find the same spec switch es for each location and wire them in the original form. Ford bought these things in massive numbers so they seldom used anything that wasn’t the correct part for the application. Just as an FYI from a product development stand point they would have spec’d the toggles as you could tell instantly that they were on or off. The original switches can be disassembled and cleaned up. They were grease filled that that grease has turned into hard wax. I have never found one of these switches that is worn out.
Played around with these for a while
But ended up with this
Console panel is centre dash panel. Toggles now have black tips to match dash
Tried eBay push button latching switches but they were poor quality and fell apart so reverted to toggles. The round black rocker switches didn’t look right in the stock dash panel
Love the black handled toggles, and your console looks great with the matching woodgrain and toggles!
