OK, Guys and Gals, here is the deal. I picked up a 1967 DGS this past summer. All original, buck tags, wax pencil marks, 37,xxx miles, documented. It needs work. Everything is there. It needs a resto and I plan on doing that. Here are my questions: What is the realistic value and potential future value? Is that value going to change dramatically if I end up modding some things? Mostly only engine and a new gear ratio. Aluminum heads. I have a vintage Holman Moody intake. Will have an Edelbrock Carb on it, hipo exhaust manifolds and a 24 inch 3 row radiator. It will look almost “period correct”. Am i realistically going to lose value? Everything else will be stock except for the XR-7 console and the electric headlight conversion. I’ve got the Marti report and it is confirmed 1 of 1. The options aren’t anything special, std interior, 289 4v, auto. Just a weird combination of options that got it to 1 of 1. What are your guys thoughts? Oh, by the way, I did post here when I first got the car, but everything stopped as soon as I got it. The wife decided I got a car, so she went house shopping. I said that was fine as along as the garage was bigger. It was win/win. Thanks in advance for all of the ideas and advice!
Welcome to the site Mark. At the end of the day it’s your car. If you’re building a car to own for many years and to enjoy driving it I say build it the way you want it. I would suggest definitely keeping all of those original pieces if one wanted to switch it all back to original stock one day. Post some pictures up, we like pictures. 37K original miles sounds like a real neat cat you own. Hope to see a future build thread. Cheers.
You ask if modifying the car will change its value. Certainly it will. If you were to offer the car for sale after you perform your restoration/modification then it will be worth less to a buyer looking for a bone stock car. But it could be worth far more to a buyer that likes what you did. If it was my car I would do whatever I wanted to it and not worry about total originality, that way it would be worth more to me. And as long as the modifications are bolt on it would be easy to reverse anything you do. As a side note the DGS option does not add very much to the value of any Cougar. It’s something neat to talk about and that is about all it is.
