10 miles per gallon

Well guys, it’s official. My vehicle does in fact get 10 miles per gallon.

AAA is taking a while…

Note to self: NEVER pass a gas station!!

DOH!

Heh. Yeah, I learned early on with mine that when the needle hits “E” there is no “extra” left to burn. It really does mean empty!
Luckily I knew it was damn low, so I had a gallon can in the trunk as a “just in case”. So then my concern became “can I get to the nearest gas station on the half gallon left in the mower can?” LOL!

This is why the low fuel light comes on with 4 gallons still in the tank.

Well sure it does! But only after you get around to installing a sending unit restored by Bill

Pretty soon there should be a repop from ACP that will also have a working low fuel capability. They have sent samples for testing. They need to get a few hundred test cycles to be sure but initial testing is good. I think they have worked to overcome the leaking and inaccuracy issues as well so keep your fingers crossed.

Yea I get 10mpg in a 1973 F250,2wd with 460cid and 3:73 gear. I would think your should get better mpgs.

Ya, but he would need to take his foot floor!

I once tried testing whether my low fuel warning worked. It didn’t. LOL. It was a poorly designed test with no back-up can in the trunk or cell phone in my pocket. Kindness of strangers thankfully prevailed.

How would i know if i had a low fuel light etc in my 69 ?
other than running it dry and walking home…

Is it a Cougar?

My 427 GT-E can get that low but it requires me to stay on the gas pedal a lot. Normally its more like 12 MPG in town, 13 highway.

I have not checked mileage on the red 428CJ but it’s likely to be worse with the 3.91 gears in the rear axle.

Owners Manual says it’s the 2nd light from the left at the top of the center stack on a standard, XR7 its in the left instrument cluster, caveat, on units “so equipped”…light comes on with the Key in the Start Position to indicate the bulb is good…I’m sure someone with more experience will illuminate us on the “so equipped” caveat.

If your car is an XR-7 or an Eliminator it will have the low fuel warning light. If it is a standard it most likely does not. The only way to find that out would be to pull the dash pad to see if a light socket actually goes to the warning light in the warning light panel. Something else that you could look at would be the electrical connection on your fuel sending unit in the gas tank. A single prong on the sending unit and no low fuel warning light, 2 prongs and it does.

Running your car out of gas may or may not prove anything. If your car does have the option but the light bulb is burned out you would not know the option is there. If there is any kind of problem with anything on that electrical circuit that prevents the light from coming on you will not know the option is there.

Low fuel sender has three posts or prongs. Only two are active

Im certain it hasnt got it …

I’m pretty sure that a base model with the factory 2v carb wouldn’t have a low fuel warning light. Still, since the sender itself is bad, that wouldn’t really matter in the first place.

It doesn’t even have that clock in the area where some did. All the warning lights and instrument cluster lights work.

10 mpgs is pretty bad. What does your car consist of for components? Are there any “performance parts”? If everything is stock then it may be out of tune. Properly set ignition timing had a tremendous effect on fuel mileage. Not just setting initial timing, but also the mechanical timing curve and vacuum advance. Where are you located? If you go to Carlisle All Ford show I always bring my tuning tools and would be happy to help dial in the ignition.

What rear axle ratio are you running?

Hi Bluestuff : If you don’t want to wriggle under the back of the car, and look at the actual gas tank / fuel sending unit, then you might want to check for the prove-out wire ( black ) on the starter side of the ignition relay ( NC post / starter relay - starter lug ).
If you choose to look under the car, then on the front side ( axle side ) of the gas tank, if you remove the wiring harness plug that connects to the sending unit, then you will see it has three prongs, and the sending unit face is marked with the engineering # : C9WF-9275-C. The stamped number is usually still quite visible, as this a very protected region of the car ( from road splash, weathering and corrosion ). As well the NON-low fuel relay systems fuel sending unit would be marked C9WF-9275-A with only one prong. If you can locate the relay under the dash ( it is WAY up at the top, almost near where the main harness exits the firewall ( green connector ) and is mounted with other relays related to the ‘convenience’ package ( standard on the XR-7’s ). The relay will be stamped ( engineering # ): C6AF-10A968-A.
Hope this helps you.

I recall when i had the dash off, there was only the brake warning bulb there.
