I have been searching the Mustang Forums and have not been able to find the answer…it was suggested I try looking here. Hopefully you can help me. I have a 1967 390 and am trying to validate and verify the proper alternator mounting location and brackets for a AC with no smog. Everyone seems to say, “No smog, it is mounted in the upper position”. But I have yet to find any information for the proper brackets. My Osborn Manual and MPC both seem to show the alternator in the lower position for AC and no smog. I was hoping for any of the following:
Pictures of a 1967 390 with upper mounted alternator
Information regarding the proper bracket/adjustment arm
Part number or engineering numbers
Page number in Osborn Manual illustrating the upper location for AC application
My 67 390 GTA built Nov. 66 with air and no smog has the alternator mounted low. Where the air pump would have been is empty space. The bracket comes off the water pump bolt and makes a bend towards the engine and then continues down to the back side of the alt. lower forward mount. The bracket looks like a sickle.
Thanks a lot for the reply. Do you happen to know if that is how it was delivered from the factory? You wouldn’t happen to have a picture? I was under (the possibly false) impression that the determining factor for upper or lower mount was smog pump…smog=lower…no smog=upper. I am beginning to believe it was actually AC that may have been the factor. On the Concours Mustang Forum I have been told high mount, but no part/engineering number have been located.
I thought I had some pictures on my phone, but nothing really clear. I will post one tonight to show you what I have. But, basically I believe it to be the original smog set up. The previous owner removed the smog pump, but it came with factory AC and the alternator was left in the lower position…with the adjusting arm attached to bottom of alternator.
Here is the set up I have now. Unfortunately the car is in storage.
The upper right bolt goes to water pump and the PO cut off the upper left bolt tab that would have attached to smog pump (I believe). If this is the correct set up for AC and non-smog, I will get get a new bracket that hasn’t been hacked up. Again, everything I have read, seems to indicate the alternator should be in the upper position, but I cannot find a part number for that application…Pictures of a correct set up would be very much appreciated.
Did your car originally have smog? The top bracket looks like from a smog setup. Can you read the stamped number on the bracket? My car is in storage right now. From memory I don’t have the top bracket just the long bolt going into the engine and a different lower bracket (from yours). My understanding is that a upper alt. is used with no smog and no A/C. But over the years I have rarely seen an upper alt. mounting.
Yes…my car originally had smog and the PO removed it. The top fixed bracket was for the smog application, but the top left bolt tab, where the pump would have attached, was cut off. It is stamped C6AE-A.
Unfortunately my car is in storage too and I am pretty much new to the hobby with very little background. Short story long, this all started with my desire to change out the 5 bladed fan/spacer combo with the correct 7 blade/clutch assembly. As I started taking things apart, I found the PO must have used what ever was laying around when he “restored” it…1970 idler tension pulley, 3 sheave water pump pulley, etc…My goal is to make it look as it should; as if it never had smog. Not a simple project when the car isn’t readily available and you try to work with 2 dimensional diagrams and 50 year old literature😖. Looks like I am going to be hauling the Osborn manuals and various brackets I have collected to see if I can figure out what would have been factory correct.
Thanks for the input. Again, if anyone has pictures of an original or correct set-up, that would be great. I can certainly put it back the way it was, but would rather do original.
I realize that and previously stated that the PO had made a few other modifications, which I am trying to correct. I guess the first question is, would this bracket (C6AE-A; assuming it hadn’t been modified) be used in a car with AC and no smog? The Osborn manual seems to indicate “yes”. If so, does the alternator go where the smog would have been (attached to the missing tab)? I am at a slight disadvantage due to the car not been readily available so I can assess potential mounting points. If this is the case, I will need a different adjustment arm. Since I have 3 different ones, I think one of them may be correct.
