1967 Cougar GT

Barn find - 1967 Mercury Cougar $6,900. Fair condition - runs. The body is straight and the paint cleans up nicely (bodywork in the 1990s). Interior and trim need attention and the paint isn’t what it used to be. I have owned it since 1992 (daily driver) and parked it in the barn during the early 2000’s. I intended to restore it, but there it sits. I roll it out every once in awhile to clean it up and get it running. It should fire up with a new battery and fresh fluids. The engine is a 351w with an FMX. I have a period-correct 390 block that I had machined but is not assembled. Message me for photos or information.

What is the VIN number, I did not see that listed in the eBay ad. Do you have a Marti Report that also confirms it being a GT?

VIN: 7F91S543010. I don’t know what a Marti Report is and I’m unlikely to pursue it. This was my first car and it’s killing me to sell it.

This is a Marti report.

This one is for my 70 XR-7 hard top. This report had a lot of information on how the car was built, when and how many are like it.
You can order one here. https://www.martiauto.com/martireports.cfm The report I posted here is the $46.00 Deluxe report. The standard report does not have any of the dates, how many and the dealer who sold it’s name. I recommend the Deluxe report. But you don’t need one. But it could help you get the money you want out of your Cougar. Something to know about S code 390 4V Cougars is not all 390 4V Cougars were GTs. Some 12,136 got 390s but only 8,444 were GTs

My car has GT emblems, which I guess could have been retrofitted before I bought it, but I knew the previous owner well enough to doubt his ambition to do so.

Please post a photo of your cars door tag that would be a start to be able to help identify it. We have a decoder locates via Cougar Club of America - Data Plate Info

The button is on the bottom left of the page that would give a print out you could also use to help identify.

Not seeing any GT emblems in the pictures. The VIN and door data won’t tell if it is a GT or not. Anyone interested in buying it would be wise to spend the $25 on a Marti Report.

Thanks for the input everyone. I’m not going to relist this once Ebay runs its course; its been an emotional weekend for me. I fielded many questions from the local listing and Ebay itself and it is clear I need to gather more info before attempting to sell. I may try again once I get some photos of the shock towers, floor pans, fuel tank and underbody - lots of folks from the east were worried about rust. I will also install the chrome trim because that spooked a few people - I just never put the effort in when the upholstery guy doing the top couldn’t figure it out and I was frustrated that he mangled the drip rail chrome. I’ve been working with the assumption he was unskilled and I could deal with it if I tried, but I better solve it if I don’t want to scare off potential buyers. I’ll relocate the GT emblems from the coffee can in the trunk back into the front fenders.

After Royce made his comment, I zoomed into all the photos and it’s difficult to even spot the holes for the emblems. The right side has the original friction-fit rivets, and the left side just has the holes. I’ll get the marti report and install the badges if I ever try this again. After this weekend, I think I’ll just arrange to have myself buried in it when the time comes.

Is there a procedure for delisting the car from this forum? Thanks again for the help and input.

My advice is to get at least the basic Marti report now. Know what you have so you can make better informed decisions as to what to do with it. The worst possible place to be, should you decide to list the car again, is to have to answer any buyer question with an “I don’t know” or be unable to back up a claim you’ve made. Installing the badge won’t be enough to prove it’s a GT; only the Marti report will do that.

Taking the time to absorb what the car was built as when new will help you represent it better. In that context, $25.00 for a basic Marti report is money well spent.
