I have owned this Cougar since 2018. It is one of my favorites, but I know I will never have the time to finish it, so it is time to offer it to the next cougar enthusiast. This is a true GT. It has just about every option available in late 1966 before the XR7 package was released. One of the reasons this car is special is its well documented history. Included is the original sales invoice, window sticker and owner/dealer correspondence.

This is an original A/C car. It if not functional, but all the hard-to-find parts are there. All the under dash vacuum connections work, so it switches from floor heat to dash vents to defrost appropriately. The headlight covers work. The system has been converted to the 1968 configuration with the vacuum running through the headlight switch. Interior lights are all LED. The radio is the original AM/FM converted to modern technology. Kick panel speakers and rear package tray speakers sound great. Taillights work with a solid state sequencer. The interior has modern sound deadening, mass back carpeting, and a rear steel trunk divider. It is the quietest cougar I have owned. The tilt wheel tilts up and down, but tilt away is not working. Original seats are in excellent shape. A driver’s side seat extender is in place. Running cat floor mats complete the interior.

Under the hood the carburetor is a modern Holley 650 backdated to look original with secondary metering plate, transfer tube and original style front bowl fuel inlet. Pertronix coil and ignition module are in place. The engine is not original. The date code is after the build date. The valve cover gaskets leak. Dual exhaust from WCCC still shines like new. GTE exhausts tips are in place. I could not resist. My original vision was to add a CJ hood scoop and stripe so it would look like the 68 ½ CJ Cougars but I did not get there. I have the hood scoop if the new owner is interested. I swapped the transmission from my GTE when that received back its numbers matching transmission. It too leaks mildly. 22 gallon fuel tank is in place. Brakes are original 4 piston brakes up front with SSBC rear disc kit in the back. This was also swapped from my previous GTE when I brought that back to stock. The 15” 69 /70 S/S wheels were also from that car.

I had the steering gear box, coupler, and idler arm changed in preparation for the sale. The excessive play previously was unbearable. No more excess play. It is much better but feels heavy on center.

In 2020 I had the floors, torque box, and the trunk floor replaced. I wrecked the fender by myself in 2021, only cosmetic. The driver door corner had previous rust repair and did not match quite right with the new fender, so I replaced the door as well. The cowl has no leak. I don’t drive in the rain, but I can wash the car without hesitation and no water on the floor. The right door has a small crease which was present when I purchased it. The car lived much of its life in New York City. It looks like perhaps a slight swipe with a pole in a parking garage?

The car is driver quality. It has been painted once before and is due for paint again. I have been driving it for the last 7 years. It is the perfect running restoration. It looks great, attracts a lot of attention. You cannot stop for gas without someone trying to guess what year it is.

This is a worthy restoration candidate. It is a highly optioned, real 390 GT with great, original owner documentation. Drive it. Restore it. Just enjoy it. I have.

Please review the photo album and videos. It takes a minute to load, be patient. Please reach out. Email is best to start. brianmcdermott2001@yahoo.com I want to offer the car here to the Cougar Community first. Thanks.

In my opinion, someone is going to get a very nice Cat for the price!

Thanks for the support!

The car is now listed on Hemmings, Make an Offer.

Feel free to reach out to me. I am more interested in the car going to someone who will take care of it and appreciate it, than making the most money on the deal. So feel free to make an offer.
