1967 standard 289 c code

Hi everyone, new to the forum and cougars. I’ve been looking at cougars for the past two weeks and came
across this add on Craigslist.

http://york.craigslist.org/cto/4873438631.html

Owner told me it was painted by previous owner 4 yrs ago but there is a quarter sized bubble on passenger door other than that its clean. Tranny has a leak and headlights don’t work (he never hooked them to see if they work). He bought the car 2 years ago drove it home and parked it, only starting it every once in awhile. Was able to talk him down to 8000 over the phone and plan on seeing it this weekend. is this a good deal?

This one I would be careful. Need to see it in person or at least have someone inspect it for you. No telling what is under that paint. Does he know what has been done to the motor? Someone put some money into some decent aftermarket and some I don’t care for but everyone has their own idea of the ultimate Cougar.
The yellow wires have to go!!! LOL

He says the motor is stock but I’m not getting the warm and fuzzy that he knows for sure. And yes the wires are definitely coming off lol and not sure how to feel about the side exhaust.

So is 8k reasonable if everything checks out?

My 2cts, if you have the spare money and you feel good about the car, buy it. There is no book that can set a fair price on these cars, whatever you and the seller come to on a deal, that’s what the car is worth. (side pipes are for Corvettes and Cobras)

I’m not that far away from this car and being a resident here I know how badly the tin worm is around here. Since you say you are going to look at it this weekend I imagine that you also live in the area. I would look it over very closely for rust and other damage. In the one open hood photo you can see the mounting bolts for the left fender and a good part of the slot for the J nut is showing. Those slots are usually completely under the fender so that is an area to look at closer.

I get what your saying about the price, and your right. My situation is that I’m almost 4 hours away and would hate to get there and be disappointed. My main concerns are the lights not being operational and the tranny leaK.

CATHOUSE I didn’t notice that. Definitely something to look into.

I can’t see the add (blocked @ work), but if you can’t make a personal inspection, I’d pay someone closeby/knowledgeable to do so.

No secret that (like the Mustang), these cars rust in the same, very specific (expensive) places, mostly when exposed to massive amounts of salt, so bear that in mind. Sidepipes would cut $1k the price, and raise my radar for other signs of hackage. Willingness of the seller to negotiate over the phone…could be a POS or the deal of the century.

Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

I’m planning to drive up from VA on Saturday. Would love to have someone inspect it for me before I get there but I don’t know anyone in the area.

I see that the air conditioner parts are missing…

doesn’t have A/C option.

Randy, How far from York are you?

The Cat looks nice in pics, but I would have a Cougar or Mustang person look at the car. I notice that the tops of the inner fender walls have had work done to them, the seam on the rear side of the tower is not showing as far as I can see and while these cars rust there when repaired correctly you should see the seam. As far as the aftermarket items go you can always sell what you dont want to keep.
Good Luck

Thanks for pointing that out. I would never have noticed it.

Hi Carlton. York is about 30 miles. West York a little farther. Glen Rock is south of York as I recall.

So, after careful consideration I decided to pass on this one. The search continues!

Thanks for all of the pointers.

I think you made a wise choice.

Might be too late, but you should watch Don Rush’s YouTube video about inspecting a Cougar. Go to YouTube and search on “WCCC 67-68 buying guide”.

I second the WCCC video. lots of good info there. Good luck and keep us posted.
