Don’t get excited…I don’t have one. There is a purported one for sale close to me. I’d like to know what characteristics a 67 XR-7 G should have. For example, the red emblem on the grill and emblem on the passenger side of dash. Would it have the hash marks on the rocker panels? What interior should it have? Should the console have a tambour door or clock? Shouldn’t it have a hood scoop? And what engine came in it? I have only known one 67 Cougar in my life so I don’t know all the specific options. Did they all come with styled steel wheels? Would there be any clues in the vin#? Did any 67 Cougars come with a 4 speed?
Okay…from the registry page:
“Taking advantage of their agreement with Gurney, L-M introduced a sales promotion during the 1967 model year with an option package called the Dan Gurney Special. The package consisted of a sticker on the passenger rear window, chrome engine dress up kit and turbine wheel covers.”
So a 67 XR-7 G should not have a dash placard or a grill emblem, correct? I’ve seen the reproduced Dan Gurney decal. Is that all the car should have?
I swear I googled before I posed the question and did not find answers. Will there be anything special about the vin#?
The was a Dan Gurney Special in 1967, but no XR7-G. IF it is a G, then it must be a '68 not a '67. The Dan Gurney Special is not the same as the XR7-G.
Thanks. I was right to be suspicious. They must have slapped some emblems on a '67 because it’s definitely a '67, by the steering wheel, lack of side markers and the seats. A '67 XR-7 should have a clock in the console, shouldn’t it? The car has an XR-7 dash but a roll up door console. I’ve only known one '67 Cougar in my life and it appears, by your Cat House, you’ve seen quite a few!
Neither does anyone else. The DGS cars are completely separate from XR7-Gs. As Bill stated in his post XR7Gs were a 1968 model package. The XR7 G is a different beast entirely. Where as the DGS was mainly a dress-up option the XR7-G cars are rare performance monsters. XR7Gs had unique hood scoops, a special console with a arm rest and a clock, fog lamps, dual exhaust (pipe in pipe) with cut outs in the rear valance panel, some XR7Gs also had sunroofs but all had the sunroof switch in the console. To this day there are still people who confuse the two designations. There were three engines in the 1967 Cougar, A Code 289 4V, C Code 289 2V, S code 390 4V (6.5 Litre). Check the vin number inside the engine compartment on the drivers side apron. A XR7 vin will start with 7F93 and a standard Cougar will start 7F91. If you are thinking of purchasing it I would recommend getting a Marti report.

Are you talking about the Cougar for sale in Dinwiddie, Va.? Cougar67, are you in the Richmond area?
Below are some pics from the Craigslist ad.
As everyone has said, not a G, but a 1967 XR-7 with a XR7-G dash emblem added.
Oh, and here is the text from the ad.
1967 XR7-G Cougar for Sale - $8000 (Dinwiddie, VA)
Car has XR7-G (Dan Gurney) dash and options. Car is 100% mechanically sound. Original 4 speed preimun fuel car. 289/302 fresh rebuild, original Hurst 4 speed shifter. All brake components new. Factory Disc front brakes. All original XR7 interior good condition. Solid body and frame. Paint good. Needs good home and TLC.
Based on the pictures, this is something of a Franken-Cougar. It is a standard (7F91) with the XR-7 dash and an XR-7G dash emblem. The console appears to be a Mustang console with the Mustang wood grain from 65-66. It looks like it might have been fairly well done, but it is not anything particularly valuable, especially if it was not originally a standard transmission car. The person who did this should have redone the wood grain on the dash and console to match to make it look more like it belonged that way, IMHO. But it looks like a decent '67 standard resto-mod based on what the pictures show.
Until recently the only available replacement dash emblem was the XR7-G version. So some people bought it and stuck it on their XR-7 dash. And then again this has a few signs of being an XR-7 “conversion”. The trunk lid has an XR-7 badge which was not used until 1968. The oil pressure gauge appears to have been replaced which often happened when people realized that the standard didn’t have the right sending unit or dash harness for the gauge.
Given all of that, an A code 289 4 speed with front disc brakes is a pretty fun car to drive.
The shifter is wrong also. It very well may be a original 4 speed car but I don’t believe the Hurst shifter was available. Either way it looks like an ok car.

Here is a picture of a 1967 XR7 4 speed. Notice the shifter handle it’s round unlike the Hurst. You can also use this photo to see how the console should look on a XR7.
Looks like a good buy to me, without being able to see it in person, anyway.
What year was the initial promo vehicle?

I hadn’t been back to this forum to check replies. Yes I was talking about this same Cougar. I think it’s MY old frankencougar that was sold in 1985 to that same area. If it does not have the roof console I’d be pretty convinced. Actually I have the VIN at home but I’m out of town for the weekend. Mine came from Hampton, VA and the second owner was a U of R student who did all the mods. It was a standard, maroon, with an XR-7 dash with very faint kneecap bumps on the passenger side. Black comfort weave upholstery, console with the tambour door (the Mustang pad wasn’t there.) It had factory disc brakes and the Hurst shifter and a 289. It also had the antenna in the rear fender. It was a '59 Impala antenna at the time. I had it from 81-85. . It was in beautiful shape when I had it but it eventually needed engine work I’m afraid to even call because I’d be in trouble if I bought it. Maybe when I get home I can dig out a picture and the VIN. So want.
I think that there were a couple of promo vehicles. I’d guess that the promo G’s were 67 models you can see small differences in the photos.

I think that shifter was available. I have one in a box downstairs. Checked the paper work with it, and it say copyright 1964, for '65 - '67 mustang, and '67 cougar.

Ford did not offer a factory installed Hurst shifter until 1970. There might have been something available through the parts department, perhaps something in the performance area (like the Give Your Cat Claws catalog), but not factory installed.
G Dub, does your shifter have the HURST name on it? Or does it just look like one? Is there a Ford part number on it?

Mine is a Hurst shifter. I’m not saying that it was factory installed, just saying that it was available.
I agree it was not a factory option. I was told that these were sold by the parts department.
I don’t see a part number on the shifter other than patent numbers.
The Hurst paperwork calls it FM-4-65 for '65 -'67 Mustang 289, and FM-4-67 for '67 Mustang and Cougar 390. Maybe others models were available that would fit. This one has more of a curve than the one on that car.
