*$12,000. 1968 Cougar 3-speed, automatic 302. Straightforward project car. Original Los Angeles vehicle.
Mechanical:
Original 302 engine runs, however the fuel in the tank is bad and the carburetor needs a rebuild. While in need of a major refresh, the engine is very much a solid foundation for a good build but will need an investment for optimal performance. Includes a/c. Headlight actuators work.
The Body
Very small bit of rust from a spot just above the windshield (due to a tear in the car cover fabric) that will need attention. Underside floor tear in the panel; this will need a re-weld or replacement of that panel. No further body issues. This is a solid, original body that will clean up with a minimum of effort.
Interior:
The interior is in good shape overall. Many of the chromed surfaces will need attention or replacement. Current owner replaced the dash. Remainder of interior is original. The dash, front and rear seats, upholstery and headliner are intact and clean. Current owner added original headrests to the front seats, a scarce upgrade.
FWIW - I brought a 1967 DGS from Missouri into CA two years ago. I figured I would be ok as 1975 and older cars are smog-check exempt here. However, emission controls started on all cars sold in CA in 1966. And a vehicle being newly registered into CA must have the controls the manufacturer installed on the car, and they must be operational.
The non-DMV verifier initially balked as my car had no under hood emissions sticker and mentioned I could buy one online for $5 and come back. In searching for one, all I found was 1968 and later. Other info indicated an air injection system would have been installed on a CA car.
However, I would have been more screwed as I have 1990-ish 5.0 / EOD swap. Maybe a smog referee would say ok, maybe not. But the bullet was dodged when I read the vehicle code and closely examine the fine print on the verification form. It indicated that 1967 and earlier non-California sold cars were “uncontrolled.” Interestingly the current form I find online refers “no sticker” cars to the CHP. YMMV
CA Uncontrolled vehicles include:
U.S. manufactured California certified vehicles from 1965 and older
U.S. manufactured federally certified vehicles from 1967 and older
