Can you eliminate the assist steering cylinder and all the mess of hoses without converting to manual steering?
If you eliminate the slave cylinder and the hoses you have converted to manual steering but you still have the pump and the control valve in place so steering will be imprecise and not powered.

This is what you will want if ditching the hydraulic assist cylinder
Before going manual look into other power steering options. The borgeson conversion is a popular one, Also options like Electronic power steering too

Would the Bergson steering box eliminate all of that
A borgeson gear box is a hydraulic unit so you’ll still have a pump, belt, and fluid. But you get to eliminate all the slave cylinder and control valve that hangs underneath

Adding newly made Chinese components will be a temporary installation.

I am not sure if the Borgeson box is made in China or not. Those who have used it,have expressed how much better it is. I do know that the original power steering system has had issues since the day they were new. This design was used on a wide variety of ford vehicles,even the Ford High boy had this design. Those truck drive like hearding cattle . Unless the person is a purist,and have a all original vehicle,they are looking for a better solution ,than this system and if it was a good system,there would not be any need for aftermarket options. My car is mostly original and a sport special. I have got the original system working as well as it did when it was new. I plan to change to a Borgenson box in the future.

I have a factory power steering setup in my 69 XR 7 351W. Several years ago I rebuilt the control valve and installed a “remanufactured” factory-style steering gear from Borgeson. Yeah, it’s not as precise as the steering gears in my 2011 Fusion or 2023 Outback, but it works fine considering the age of the design. Steering is OK, doesn’t wander and doesn’t leak. I recently installed a new rag joint and an Ididit tilt steering column.

I think you said it best. Mine drives good for what it is,and drives well enough I could take it on a multiple day trip, but the steering is not very responsive to input, compared to modern cars.After I have been behind the wheel a while, I don’t pay much attention to how it steers.
The parts on eBay are made in China. Restored originals are available but they may cost a lot more.

Yea, I understand eBay parts. I am referring more to the Borgenson steering box with the built in power steering. This was never original to the cougar or early ford products. I nickname this as a GM style steering box ,as this design was used by GM and probably other manufacturers that I don’t know about. It has a faster ratio and should make steering a little more responsive and not have the leaks and other issues that come with the original ford design system . At some point I plan to find out. For now the original equipment works.

The Chinese copies leak profusely and are not like the original parts.

Most people seem happy with the Borgeson PS conversion. There are YouTube videos documenting the work and plenty of reviews out there. Maier Racing does an alternate version, I believe with an ABC box and KRC pump. The Maier premium may only be justified on the track… enquiring minds.
An email direct to Borgeson might clarify material and manufacturing sources.

Borgeson is offered by many classic parts retailers.
Plenty of eBay listings NOT originating in China. eBay is not Temu.
Some longstanding members of this forum are also retailers (some even on eBay), and many will, and have, explained how China fits into today’s supply chain. As a client recently put it “50% of the world’s manufacturing is now China, so what are you gonna do?”

The problem is not the Chines people or the Chinese worker. The problem is that the Borgeson copies leak.

Which are Chinese copies and which are authentic Borgeson?
Saw something on a vette forum about upgrading the fittings to minimize leaks.
I think if you buy it from Borgeson or an authorized distributor like Summit or Jegs etc. you’ll be fine. Everything is copied these days and copies are likely coming from China
