This 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7 is a true and solid Arizona car. It still has the original black exterior paint. The white vinyl top has been removed and will need to be replaced. The car has power brakes, power steering, and is an AC car. The original motor and transmission were pulled. I do have a c4 transmission that goes with car. The car comes with AC compressor, alternator brackets, and ac brackets. I also have a drive shaft with car. This Cougar originally came with a 302 4-barrel engine… It was originally manufactured in San Jose, California and then shipped to a dealer in Los Angeles. The odometer read 59,000.

I do know something about Cougars, I bought my first '67 in 1972, but I don’t know everything, maybe you do. I asked the question because I was mistakenly believing that the mirrors weren’t available until some very knowledgeable Cougar people started making reproductions just a few years ago. My question was answered by both Royce and Dennis, two more people that know more about Cougars than I ever will. That’s what’s great about this forum; there are real Cougar experts here that have been sharing their experience with us for years.
So what is the difference between the new West Coast RH reproduction Cougar mirror (made by Scott Drake), and the supposed “over the counter” original Ford mirror? Inquiring minds want to know. Does someone have documentation that it was actually available in 1967-1968? Part #, cost, or in an original brochure, etc?
The difference is that the mirror that WCCC sells is a “phantom” part, i.e., original in appearance and function but never actually offered by FoMoCo. It is a very good RH non-remote version of the LH mirror and of good quality. The mirror I have on my car, which has been there since '93, is one of several available over the parts counter for FoMoCo products of the era. It was meant to be used on all Ford and Mercury products for a few years in the era.
The main difference is that the arm on the WCCC version mirrors the Cougar-specific LH version. The dealer accessory version has the more typical arm/base, which cannot be mounted on a Cougar at the same (RH) place as the LH mirror without causing interference when opening the vent window. To solve this problem, I mounted it on my Cougar’s body “chamfer” so that it would clear. The other thing I did was to rotate the head so that it matched the LH one. Don’t recall the part number and don’t have a scan of the '68 accessories brochure handy but that information is not hard to find if you are so inclined. I think the original cost was around $7.00 back in the day.
Take a look at my avatar photo and you can sort of see the mirror.
