I have just purchased a 1968 Cougar XR7,and the wiring is a nightmare,the last owner chopped up the wires,and now I’m trying to track down the wires that run to Alt.and starterrelay.The car does crank and run but only after hitting the jump box to it.So its not charging battery and some indicator lights are not working.If someone has any information on the diagram or can send me a picture of how yours is ran.Thanks!

That diagram is for a standard Cougar, not XR7. If your main harness is okay, the alternator harness is fairly inexpensive.

I know you said you just bought the Cougar, but does your harness look like the PO tried to install a 3G alternator and/or a PMGR starter? Also, can you post a couple of pictures of the harness where it was spliced. The pictures might help us determine how to go about troubleshooting your problem.

BTW, where are you located?

If you still have a 65A alternator in your cat you should have a large black wire coming off the output post, an orange wire off the field post and a small black wire as a case ground (this jumps over to the engine block). All three head into a connector and on the other side the large black wire goes to the battery side of the starter solenoid, the orange wire turns white and goes to the voltage regulator and the black wire splits into two and heads to two separate grounds.
There should be 11+ volts at the field post with the ignition switch in the run position and 12+ volts output heading back into the battery to charge it.

…and the charging circuit is wired differently on the XR-7 how?

Thanks everyone for the help with the diagrams,I will be posting pictures tomorrow,not sure on the 3G Alt,but I know the main harness where cut right underneath the battery,Alt doesn’t have the pigtail harness I see online for the 68XR7,might be wrong.I’m located in Dallas TX.I will download them tonight and try to get some since of what needs to be done.Thanks

I do have that same amp Alt,same color wires,will be hooking everything up tomorrow,anyone happen to know where the canister for the headlight go,I do believe on the driverside inner fender.Got my fingers crossed.
