I am wondering if anybody can tell me where they have found a build sheet for a car built around the same time as my G-car. My car was built in Dearborn with a build date in March of 1968. I have just removed the front seats and console from my car and it still has the original carpet in it that to the best of my knowledge has never been removed. I only want to disturb it should there be a good chance of finding the build sheet under it as the screws that hold the carpet down may have an issue coming out.
Scott, for some '68 cars, I know a car restorer that found a few build sheets taped to the main dash wiring harness. Sometimes folded in a small rectangle and taped to the main feed behind the gauge cluster. Others have found under the rear seat sound deadener.
Good luck
I’ve found them in all the above mentioned places an also behind the bucket seat backs. The last one I found was in the passenger seat bottom folded into the seat springs. One more thing…the more common the car, the more likely you are to find them…or at least it seems so.
I found the one on Cheshire Cat ('68 XR-7) under the sound deadener on the driver side front floor. I also found a vinyl top traveller under the carpet in the rear seat area.
For Dearborn car they have been found many different places since workers at that plant often included them into the sub assembles then sent those to the line. The buildsheets (with rotation number visible) would allow workers to identify which cars the subassembly was meant for.
Depending on year look
Under drivers side carpet or underlayment
Between seat springs and seat backing
On the back of door panels
No buildsheet but you can sometimes find the tape or what remains of the section of tape that held the buildsheet to the front of the body on the radiator support or either one (seen more drivers side) of the inner fender panels forward of the shock towers.
Sometimes but not often you can find one wrinkled up and shoved behind one of the rear seat trim panels (quarter panel areas)
Well I spent some time yesterday removing everything needed to pull up the original carpet in the hope of finding a build sheet but none was found. I looked everywhere else that was suggested but no luck. Below is all the extra stuff I did find. I guess they really did not care about saving the Ford any money when they slapped these old cats together.
Interesting…I had my whole G apart and never found one. Be interesting if one has been found in a G car?
Other then the part number tags the only interesting paper work was a quality “hold” tag on the tilt column by the firewall. Went back and looked at my note ( I have all the parts numbers from the G wrote down if you ever need to know one) book and it said. “Don’t use this material unit” then wrote on the tag was “released by quality control 263217” Steering column date coded February 23 1968 and my G was built on March 21 1968.
