Although unexpected, I’ve been presented with an option for a higher end vehicle I’m going to move forward with. I hadn’t originally planned this as can be seen with the time/money I have invested into this car, but I am go to put my 68 XR-7 on the market…I am the 2nd family owner as I purchased from the original family who had it for approx 52 years.
The details for the car on on this Bring A Trailer link: No Reserve: Single-Family-Owned 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7 for sale on BaT Auctions - sold for $28,100 on October 14, 2020 (Lot #37,773) | Bring a Trailer
The original owner’s family made a significant investment ($18.8k) back in 2008…rebuilt engine, trans, rear end, brake components. All paperwork (sales, service, etc) from date it was purchased will be included. The original BAT listing explains the car was family (Dad/son) kept car in California its entire life. Car was painted in 80’s and still has original top…I haven’t seen any paint bubbles or other problems that would indicate rust…clean undercarriage.
In addition to what’s on that link, I have done the following:
- Installed the 17" Legendary Shelby wheels, with new General tires. Original wheels and hubcaps will go with it.
- Installed a new Holley 350 CFM Avenger carb to replace the older Holley previous owner installed in the 70’s that will be included
- Fixed the odometer, serviced / cleaned the speedometer
- Converted tach to modern electronics…done by Rocketman
- Installed Rocketman headlight relays
- Installed a 3 relay power distribution box under hood…looks clean, but can be easily removed. Installed to power Pertronix Ignitor, carb choke, planned new radio, etc…
- Installed Pertronix Ignitor II and Flamethrower II coil…replaced Ignitor I previous owner installed in 2008
- Installed LEDs in all interior / exterior lights…except for headlights
- Tuneup…plugs, wires, cap, rotor
- Installed new passenger side mirror
- Installed export brace with correct cowl bolts
- Installed C6 low profile pan with drain plug…performed 3 drain and fills. Will include original pan. Trans shifts well…believe previous owner installed a shift kit
- Installed NPD seat extender on drivers side seat…2” increase in legroom
- Replaced all cooling hoses, a/c heater water valve, thermostat
- Replaced front/rear shocks with KYB GR-2 / Excel-G models
- Replaced some weather stripping (trunk, cowl), with beltline still in box
- Not installed, but will include a new factory style distributor that was gone through and recurved…all in by 2800 rpm.
The only issues I have encountered are:
- Small spot of rust in trunk (flat portion - drivers side near near rear panel) with a few perforations. No other rust through that I could find on the car. I ground down the paint/rust, used a rust converter, filled with a metal epoxy, primed, and painted in body color…have pics. I have the small trunk drop off panel replacement for that person that wants to cut out this small section and weld in replacement. The original BAT listing illustrated surface rust on both trunk drop offs…that was only surface rust which I ground down/primed/painted.
- Occasional drop of engine oil near engine / trans. I torqued the oil pan bolts per spec…that eliminated most leakage, but still have the occasional drip every few days.
- A/C doesn’t blow cold per original owner. All components in place and compressor will engage properly. I assume a refrigerant leak at this time.
I am fortunate where I am not in a rush to sell, but may place it on BAT next month. Otherwise, will continue to drive and place in storage this winter.
I am asking $32.9k at this time. I have a number of other parts (new leaf springs, extra Legendary 17x7 wheel, O2 sensor/gauge, misc hoses / weather stripping) I may include depending on selling price.
thanks
Jeff
