1968 XR7 Cougar Side Mirrors

I am new to the restoration side of Cougar ownership. I recently purchased a 1968 XR7 Cougar that is going to need a good paint job as the hood is rusty from the previous owner storing leaking yard chemicals on it. When the trim pieces are removed for preparation for painting, I was planning on replacing the outside mirrors. My cat currently has a manual mirror on the drivers’ side, and none on the passenger side.

Would it be possible to put a pair of remotely activated mirrors on after painting without too much work (or expense)? I am not familiar with how much work it would be, or if there is enough room inside the doors for any extra mirror remote cable? And should whatever hole drilling if needed, be done before or after paint or primer?

What would you suggest the best way to do it would be, and which vendor would you get the mirrors from?

Many thanks
Fran

I’m sure it can be done without issue. There is only a remote mirror for the drives side that I’m aware of. Passenger side is manual with two options- standard mirror glass or convex glass. Making this swap will mean cutting holes in your door panel as well as the outer portion of the door under the mirror. WCCC’s has the parts you’d need. I’d drill the holes before painting your car and do a test fit.

Since your driver side door is already equipped with a remote mirror, you will not have to do any modifications to the door or door panel. As mentioned before, the passenger side is not remote.

ALWAYS take care of anything like that BEFORE paint. You’ll thank yourself later.
