1968 XR7-G Shifter Decal

I’m hoping perhaps Don or someone else can answer this. My Tribute 68 XR7-G will have a 5 speed transmission install, the XR7-Gs had a walking cat emblem on the shift knob so there was a small plate placed in front of the shifter on the console to indicate shift pattern. I would like to make up my own but showing the shift pattern for the 5 speed rather than the original 4 speed version. WCCC has a nice repo of the 4 speed version, does anyone know if they make a version with a 5 speed pattern? Most likely not so can someone tell me the exact dimensions of the plate? Any pictures of the original location would be helpful as well.

WCCC repo of the original.

Here is the subject being discussed over at the SAAC forum.

You could set up the art on your computer and take it to your local trophy shop. I’ve done lots of trophies for the DCC and CCOA and they can print anything on just about any size gold or silver plaque with adhesive on the back.

Thanks Phillip, thats exactly what I was thinking! Not the same location as the mustang though as that’s where the sunroof and fog light switch goes, I believe the cougar one is in front of the shifter.

I didn’t realize that the manual XR7G’s had the walking Cougar on the shifter handle. Was the cat like the one used on the automatic handle? Does anyone have a photo?
Steven

I have a picture of one, I’ll post when I get home from work. It was a wood knob like the Shelby’s had but with a silver cougar emblem. I have one somewhere. WCCC also was selling one, not sure if they still have it though.

Here is the shift knob. The shift patten plaque we have is NOS.

Thanks for posting the link to the knob Don. That’s a good looking NOS piece.
Steven

Unless I misunderstood, the consensus over at the Shelby camp is that these wooden shifter knobs were intended for the GT500 KRs and the XR7-Gs with manual transmissions but it is doubtful they were available in time and the XR-7 “woodgrain” plastic knobs were used instead.

You can poke around the SAAC forum and find several discussions on the subject.

Guess I should have looked through the blue prints first. Going to get one made up, I’ll post how it turns out.

The Shelby Walnut shifter knobs are the same with a different badge, they are not hard to find if you know the right people. If you also know anyone that does wood working with a lathe they are not hard to replicate.

I’m installing a TKO 5-speed for a little less revs on Canada’s gas prices and thought I’d make sure the shift pattern indicator was correct. Did some research and got it made up by a friend that does engraving for next to nothing.

That looks pretty darned nice.

Thanks Scott. Wow looking at your signature pic I see another G car, how many have you owed or own now, lol. I just remember the old green one you had 15ish years ago?

I have had three XR7-Gs. The Augusta green one is now owned by Jeff in St. Albert, a Lime Frost green one I bought in San Jose, in August, is now in Miami, and the Madras blue one I had my eye on since it’s debut at a show just East of Seattle back in 99. I aquired it in 2009. It originaly came with Raders, so I am going to display it with a set of Rader wheels at local shows and those long distance ones it gets trailered to (I will also keep the styled steel wheels for cruising and driving to other long distance stuff). The other set of five Raders I have I am going to, hopefuly, sell to another G owner. I haven’t really tried to sell them yet, but I think I am going to start the process.

Very nice, I like the Madras blue. Keep me in mind for those Raders.

Send me an e-mail at scott.f@telus.net and we can discuss the sale of the Rader wheels.

I think the shift pattern plate looks very good. What’s the plan for mounting it to the console? Glue of two sided tape?

Here is a couple of pictures of the Lime Frost G that Scott used to own. It’s in Miami with my brother Dennis.

If you look at my signature picture it has Rader wheels but they have been removed and will only be used for show duty. Much like Scott is doing.
Steven

I’m thinking really thin double sided tap for obvious reasons.

I remember that car at club meetings years ago when I was still in Vancouver. Nice car.

You must be thinking of Scott’s old Augusta Green G since this Lime Frost one never made it further north than my garage in the Seattle suburbs.

Doh! Yes you are right, the old Augusta green one.

If it were me I’d probably still have them all as I am one of those people that has a hard time parting with my toys.. Heck I still have my first car, 1967 7-Litre Galaxie.

Jeff thanks for clearing that up. I didn’t think our G crossed the border. I was going to send a email to you and Scott for clarification, with all of the documentation the car has that “far northern Canada” trip would have been missing.
