1968 XR7 GT 4 speed on Ebay

Pretty rare car from what I understand but needs a lot of work - would be interesting to see how realistic the reserve is…

About a $30,000 and up Cougar if restored right. I would verify what is there in the parts. Like the air cleaner. Check the vin stamp on the engine to see if it is original. This would be the top of the line performance Cougar for the 67 model year.

Was the Vin.stamped on a 390? My 67 has the OG engine and has no vin on the block?

Stamped on the rear driverside cyl head.

“Stamped on the rear driverside cyl head.”

In 1967?? I thought the VIN stamping started later on.

I like the “Mercury” scripted valve covers.
Probably not the original engine, I don’t see cylinder heads with the smog ports.

Sure looks like a '68 to me…

I just looked again Brian? And no vin on the head or block? I am talking about a 67 GT?

168 of 3308 390-4V XR-7’s came with a 4 speed, only about 5%. Wow

Yes, not federal mandated until January 1 1968 to have a partial vin stamp. before that it was spotty on the performance engines according to sportyworty in a conversation a few years back. He stated they stamp some of the performance engines for warranty prior to 68. The 67 GT was the performance engine for 67 so I would think you would find it on an original. I just bought 67 GT with the original drivetrain intact. I’ll check it tonight. Also, look at the front of the p-side cyl head in case the heads got swapped. Brian Aust has an original 67 GT as well that could check for a vin stamp.

I looked at the auction but the reserve is now the reserve isn’t showing because of bids being placed. What was the reserve?
Steven

It is a '68.

Sorry, may have given you the wrong idea - the reserve was never shown, I just thought it would be interesting to be able to know what it is…

The 168 is the number of XR7’s with the code 6 close ratio 4 speed. You also have non XR7 code 6 close ratio and code 5 wide ratio and XR7 code 5 wide ratio.

So what would be considered more desirable a 390 GT with a factory 4 speed or a Hertz G?

The dude’s Marti report says it is a close ratio 4 speed.

I would go with the XR7-G Hertz rental. Non Hertz XR7-G’s, could be ordered with 4 speed transmissions.

X’s 2 on the Hertz XR7G

Steven

For 1967 the most collectible Cougar is the XR-7 GT 4 speed.

For 1968 things get a lot more complicated.

In MY OPINION the list looks like this for factory produced cars:

XR7-G 428CJ 4 speed (plus for sunroof)
XR7 GT-E 428CJ 4 speed
XR7-G 428CJ
XR-7 GT-E 427 / 428CJ
Standard GT-E 427 / 428CJ
XR7-G 390 (plus for 4 speed, sunroof)
XR7-G all others (plus for sunroof, 4 speed)
XR7-7 GT (plus for 4 speed)
GT (plus for 4 speed)

We have seen many GTEs sell for good prices but I haven’t seen or heard of how much one of the 3 G CJ 4speeds has sold for. Except the one I passed on in the 70s for $3500 (sunroof).

I believe that only one remains. I can’t remember the last time a CJ G car sold.
