1968 xr7G Hertz Rent-A-Racer xr7g Barn find (SOLD)

This was just pulled out of a barn locally after sitting MANY years with a tattered car cover ruining the original paint. Many of us in the Cougar community thought all of the remaining xr7G Hertz Rent-A-Racer cars that would be found, had been found but up pops this one! There were 188 390 S code equipped G’s made for Hertz and equipped by AO Smith. Less than 100 have been accounted for and this one is one of the more complete ones that is numbers matching down to the smog pump and owners manual. It is mostly solid with some soft spots in the trunk and lower quarters. For several years after it was parked in the early 80’s it was started once in awhile but has not run in decades. So far all I have done is replace the ancient tires, install correct repro wheel center caps and exhaust tips, lubricate the window regulators, remove a trailer hitch, replace a broken grille section and do some general clean up. All the impossible to find parts are accounted for except the click pins for the hood and manual crank handle for the sunroof. This car needs everything mechanically, lots of greasy leaks underneath, froze up smog pump, rotted freeze plugs, crumbling original exhaust and the list goes on. Brought to show quality they can be worth well into the six figures, the twin to this in cardinal red has a sale pending at $160k currently. As soon as my lift is free I will be taking LOTS of pictures of the underside. I will not entertain offers until you come out and inspect it. This car will cost a FORTUNE to restore, please consider that before inquiring. Don Rush 5O3-463-113O West Coast Classic Cougar

SOLD! Randy the bronco guy bought it, he is from my area and was a charter member of Cougars NW in the 80’s. It has been his quest for many years to obtain a black cherry G. Glad it is going to the right home!

The reason I chose not to put it on bring a trailer was I get to choose the buyer this way, I had to turn down to other perspective buyers because one said it’s just gonna go in his barn and never see the light of day and the other one had never restored a car and was trying to get a loan to purchase it. I’ve been doing this long enough to know what is a good fit and what is not.

I agree with Don, on how it was sold. I to hope to have a XR7-G to add with all the other eight 67-70 cougars in the garage, just a few more for the the collection someday.

Has to be, Randys shop is a couple miles from mine, maybe Ill pop in and ignore the broncos to see a cougar project!

Congratulations to the new owner! Please register it with the XR7-G Registry when you can.

Hi Don,
I did not see a sunroof listed on the Marti report, I thought all Hertz G’s had a sunroof.
My Hertz G it is listed on the report.
Craig

The marti reflects how it left the factory, what happened at AO smith or other subcontractors would usually appear on the window sticker.
