1969-70 Styled Steel Wheels, how to refinish?

The styled-steel wheels on my 1970 Cougar XR-7 convertible are chipped and rusty in places, and need to be refinished. What’s the procedure? I imagine powdercoating is better than painting, so take them to a powdercoater, to be stripped and powdercoated. What’s the correct color? My wheels seem to be painted much darker than what I commonly see.

Yeah those are too dark. Gorgeous Cougar though! I removed the chrome opening trim, then sanded and degreased. Inspected very closely for loose rivets and fatigue cracks. Sprayed the argent silver first, then masked and applied semi gloss black to the rest of the wheel. Polished up the chrome trim and reinstalled. I used the paint that John sells and color is spot-on. My only gripe is the silver turned out a touch glossier than original. Pic is comparison between my original spare and a refinished wheel.

Not a good sign that the New Dark Argent spray paint for the 69-70 Cougar or Mustang Is out of stock at WCCC.

And at Holley, SCOTT DRAKE MACH 1 MOLDING ACCUMATCH™ SPECIALTY APPLICATION PAINT, (DARK ARGENT), which appears to be the same thing, is listed as Discontinued.

There’s also the question of whether the wheels should be painted, or powder coated. Not having the exact color paint available might be a factor.

Eastwood has Ford Argent Silver powder coat. Is this the argent we’re looking for?

Powder coat would be more durable, but they were painted originally and held up pretty well.
That VHT looks kinda light - I think you need dark argent. Here is what I used:
1969-1973 Mercury Cougar Grey Metallic Wheel Paint

Maybe it’s me, but those wheels are AWESOME on the '69-70 cars! I might be biased though by my prior Cougar…

Hello Felis_Fidelis
I used this Rust-Oleum Graphite Metallic Paint on my wheels
Purchased at Menards, however, the paint is likely available at many different retailers.

I bet the metallic looks good in the sun! Any pics of a finished wheel?

Hello Calicat,

I no longer have the Cougar. I did also paint my car trailer wheels with the same paint color.
Nothing fancy on the car trailer though, but the wheels, IMHO, do look good.
